A Blogging Question

‘Writer’s Treasure Chest’ exists now for merely two years. I would say, I have built a nice and supportive audience and wonderful people following and reading and commenting regularly.

This blog was always ever thought of being a writer’s blog. Supporting other authors, posts about writing, re-blogging from other author’s blogs. That’s what it should be.

Occasionally I throw in some small personal posts like Happy… (whatever holiday comes up) and a very few personally important articles like the ‘National Anthem’ day, my showing up on a couple of radio shows or the BOAW blog fest participation posts.

Lately, I was involved in a discussion about fashion. Questions came up, and I had tons of fun thinking about it when all of a sudden the devil on one of my shoulders whispered: “This would be a fun blog post.”

But then there was the little angel on the other shoulder replying: ‘Writer’s Treasure Chest’ is a writer’s blog. Trivial fashion articles are not to be posted.”

I know, my little angel is right. ‘Writer’s Treasure Chest’ is a writer’s blog. But is there anything that speaks against an occasional personal blog post?

And here I’m not sure what to think. My devil ain’t happy with me – nor my angel, if it comes to that. I wouldn’t be surprised if these two started fighting.

But that’s not the point.

I’d like to hear your opinion: What should I – or can I do?  Am I supposed to let an occasional personal article show up on ‘Writer’s Treasure Chest’ or is the blog to be left alone the way it is? What do you think? Please help me out.

Thank you!

  1. I think it is fun to see personal things about writers. I do the same on my blog on occasion and get comments at I think it is a fun idea. Have fun can’t wait to see the new personal interest posts.

  2. As you know, my blog is primarily to promote authors, poets and writers by introducing them (and their books) to potential readers / fans / friends; finding informative articles to help them and being a general resource for them.
However, I also post about things I find funny, educational, awe inspiring and inspirational.
In other words, general stuff I’d share with friends in conversations – which, when you think about it, is what a blog post is – a conversation with friends (your followers and readers).
However, I avoid discussing politics, religion and cruelty (unless it’s an emergency call to arms).

  3. Writers like to hear about fashion and other interesting things. That´s how we get our ideas! I think it is fun to throw in a variety of posts to keep it interesting for you and your readers.

  4. I think it’s your blog, and ultimately you should write what you want. I often advise people to steer clear of controversial topics, unless you like verbal wars breaking out on your blog. I don’t. Other than that, everything you blog about just helps people get to know the real you.

    1. Thank you so much for your word of encouragement Renee. I will see what I can do. I don’t want verbal wars on my blog either and I won’t agree on political or controversial guest posts on my blog, that’s why I of course won’t post them either.
But a bit of this or that. I love to bake, I love to comment on fashion, of course I do have opinions about different things, I figure we will see soon enough what I can come up with.

  5. If you feel guilty write about writing about fashion from a writer’s perspective.
How can you generate interest in fashion with disinterested readers.
    Fashion writing tropes.
Writing about fashion in your fiction.
    Same with food:
Energy foods for writers on a deadline
Best coffee spots to write from (You can solicit reader’s tips).

Once you have your writing hook, you’re free to digress and segue in just about any direction. It is a blog.

  6. Some people are very fashionate about fashion. Lately it seems it has become very fashionable to write articles on fashion and cosmetics. Over the last two years I have picked up about two dozen female bloggers whose blogs are dedicated totally to fashion, modeling and cosmetics. I wonder how they got to my blog (no ? used here as this is a declarative sentence not an interrogative) . Of course I return visit and they appear to be professional or non nonprofessional women who are very well versed on the topics. I don’t know what to say. My fashion or dress style is conservative old retired school teacher look. However, since I am from Miami I can switch to the Tom Selleck look or the Don Johnson look from time to time. In today’s society it seems fashionablenestisyness is very important.

    1. Hi Carl,
Thanks so much for joining this discussion. I heard about fashion bloggers. And I never wanted to join them. Of course I’m a woman and occasional discussions about fashion are inevitable. But I’m not that deep into fashion to be honest.
I prefer wearing comfortable clothes, own occasional business suits or the one and other dress, but that’s about it. I’m not one to clean out her closet seasonally. I prefer classic, timeless clothes that I like and that I think look good on me.
But once in a while I like talking about it.
In this case me mentioning fashion it was only an example. There are several things I’m interested in.
I appreciate your opinion and I thank you for sharing it with us. I’m still smiling about the Tom Selleck and Don Johnson looks. It took me back in time. 🙂

  7. Aurora,

Your blog’s brand is absolutely sufficiently established to allow for the occasional “off-topic” post! My own blog is about storytelling craft, but that hasn’t stopped me from publishing the occasional anecdote or rumination on turning forty or how much I miss the seasons in Southern California if the mood strikes. Oddly enough, those are often my most popular posts; readers seem to appreciate a more personal touch every so often, a deviation from the norm. And exploring different facets of my interests feeds my own enthusiasm for the blog, which in turn translates into a more engaging reading experience. Win-win.

And consider this: Unlike fiction writing, which is by necessity polished to perfection, blogging allows for experimentation and digression; it’s an intellectual incubator that helps me work through ideas, debate them with others, and find connections and correlations between seemingly unrelated things — it needn’t be a complete entity unto itself. That’s the great gift of blogging: its versatility. Going off-topic doesn’t necessarily mean going off-brand; all it shows is a willingness to embrace other ideas and other disciplines, and maybe find unexpected commonalties between them.

I hope you do publish that article on fashion; I, for one, would love to read it…

I have to admit, I was a little scared, but it turned out that the blog post I had in mind got me quite a few reactions and comments I really appreciate. You can find them here: https://aurorajalexander.wordpress.com/2017/04/10/i-never-wore-a-ballroom-gown/
