Where Do Your Ideas Come From? – Written By Don Massenzio

Author Don Massenzio asks us where our ideas come from. Let’s read what he has to say about this subject. Thank you very much for all your hard blogging work for us, Don!

As I look at my writing notebook (you should consider carrying one), I see the dozens of story, setting and character ideas that I have collected and I’m both inspired and anxious.

There are many ideas that I want to turn into stories. It’s hard to write one at a time. At any given time I have a book and some kind of serial or short story going at the same time. This is tough with a 50-hour per week day job and 45 weeks of travel per year, but I somehow manage to squeeze in some writing.

As I looked at these ideas, I began thinking about where the ideas that I’ve recorded come from. I thought that telling you some of my sources might help you look at some idea generation possibilities you might not have thought of.

  1. Don certainly has a prolific mind and imagination, but it’s no secret, however much we play around with other notions, ‘our muse’ in whatever form we see her/him, IS OUR MIND. And Don has a very active, reliable one! Mine is much older than Don’s but is still very fertile, so “thank you brain…” xx

  2. Ideas come from all over the place in my case. I once ran across a couple of students carrying placards for a presentation on fungi and got an idea for a story but only fleshed it out with Helen. That idea is currently in development for another installment of the Para-Earth Series called the Misty Mountains, which will again take place out here in Santa Cruz, Ca. You just never know where or when inspiration may hit you.

    1. I know what you mean. Sometimes they just ‘fly’ through the air and we might be lucky and ‘catch’ them. 🙂 (That’s what I got OneNote with me at all times, to take notes, no matter where I am. (except in church, maybe. LOL))
Oh – and I’m happy to see that the Para-Earth Series is going to continue! Can’t wait!
