The Future of Barnes and Nobles – Written By Nicholas C. Rossis

Thank you so much for this article, Nicolas, even though it almost breaks my heart.

The Passive Guy recently shared a post by Jane Friedman on the future of Barnes & Noble; a topic you may remember from my earlier post, “How Amazon Destroyed Barnes & Noble.”

Quite frankly, Jane’s post made me sad. The latest chairman, James Daunt, is credited with saving UK’s famous bookstore, Waterstons. However, all you got to do is read the following quotes to understand that he really doesn’t get B&N – or books.

Early on, when Daunt was asked what he thought of Barnes & Noble on his last store visit, he said, “There were too many books,” by which he meant that featuring the right inventory is more important that stocking a big blur of titles. Back in 2015, he commented to Slate, “My faculties just shut down when I go in there.”

So… the big problem with a bookstore is that it has too many books.

And this gem:

Daunt loves the physical book, but he wants to give customers a digital option to get them into reading as an entry to physical books.

An entry. To physical books. Like, kids use digital books but us, highbrow grownups, know better. “Thank you, Amazon, B&N will stick to our guns and our lovely paper. No need for this new fandangled way of doing things.”

Author Spotlight – D. E. Haggerty

author-photo-2016Welcome!

Please introduce yourself.

I grew up reading everything I could get my hands on from my mom’s Harlequin romances to Nancy Drew to Little Women. When I wasn’t flipping pages in a library book, I was penning horrendous poems, writing songs no one should ever sing, or drafting stories which have thankfully been destroyed. College and a stint in the U.S. Army came along, robbing me of free time to write and read, although I did manage, every once in a while, to sneak a book into my rucksack between rolled up socks, MRIs, t-shirts, and cold weather gear. After surviving the army experience, I went back to school and got my law degree. I jumped ship and joined the hubby in the Netherlands before the graduation ceremony could even begin. A few years into my legal career, I was exhausted, fed up, and just plain done. I quit my job and sat down to write a manuscript, which I promptly hid in the attic after returning to the law. But being a lawyer really wasn’t my thing, so I quit (again!) and went off to Germany to start a B&B. Turns out being a B&B owner wasn’t my thing either. I decided to follow the husband to Istanbul for a few years where I managed to churn out book after book. But ten years was too many to stay away from ‘home’. I packed up again and moved to The Hague where I’m currently working on my next book. I hope I’ll always be working on my next book.

  1. When did you start writing?

I can’t actually remember a time I didn’t write. I even remember writing stories in a notebook on the yellow school bus on the way to elementary school. Although I had to stop writing stories for a while when life just got too busy, I always kept reading (even if I had to sneak a book into my Army rucksack) and making up stories in my head.

  1. What motivates you to write?

I love making up stories. Seriously, I am always thinking up a story. If I’m out to eat, I’ll spend half the time coming up with background stories for the other dinners. Obviously, I need help.

  1. What genre do you write in and what made you chose this particular genre?

I actually write in a few genres. The majority of my books are cozy mysteries, but I write romantic comedies as well. I’ve also written a military suspense novel and an historical novel. No matter what genre you categorize my books in, there’s always some romance in there somewhere and a bit of a mystery as well. I’m completely and utterly fascinated with the world. I’ve studied everything from history to law to international relations to environmental studies to nutritional counseling. I guess you could say this ‘fascination’ is reflected in the range of genres in which I write. You could also just say I’m crazy. You wouldn’t be the first.

  1. What is your goal in writing? Do you have dreams where your writing should take you?

I’m super-duper lucky that I can write full-time even though I don’t actually make enough money off my books to support myself. It would be completely and totally awesome if I could earn sufficient royalties to actually support myself, although then I’d have to curb my one-click addiction.

  1. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and if yes, how do you deal with it?

Everyone suffers from writer’s block. If they say they don’t, they lie! There’s really only one solution to writer’s block – Just. Keep. Writing. It doesn’t have to be on your work in progress, but write something, anything! A blog article, an outline for a new book idea, it doesn’t matter. Just do it.

  1. What advice would you like to give new, hopeful authors?

Do not expect miracles. Sure, there are those rare and beautiful creatures who have an international bestseller with their first novel but that’s the exception and not the rule. Most of the writers I know write as a hobby because they need to support themselves. It’s also important to realize being an author is not only about writing. Whether you’re self-published or not, you need to do a lot of marketing and networking yourself. Be prepared for the reality that is being an author in today’s world.

  1. Please, tell us about your work.

I just released a bundle of my second cozy mystery series, Death by Cupcake. The bundle contains the three books in the series: Never Trust a Skinny Cupcake Baker, Bring Your Own Baker, and Self-Serve Murder. The novels take place at Callie’s Cakes, a cupcake bakery owned by the heroine of Never Trust A Skinny Cupcake Baker. Each novel contains a serving of mystery with a side of romance and a sprinkling of laughs. Cupcakes are not included.

Thank you for being my guest. It was such a pleasure to have you here!!

Synopsis Bring Your Own Baker:

Anna just wants to earn enough money on the side to buy into the bakery, Callie’s Cakes, where she works together with her best nerd pal Callie. The last thing she expects to see when she walks into Arthur’s apartment to do some moonlighting is a blood bath. Callie’s ready to jump into the investigation into Arthur’s murder, and she’s bringing another bakery worker, Kristie, into their hijinks whether Kristie wants to or not. But things aren’t as they seem. There are gang affiliations, illegal gambling dens, and ladies of the night to wade through. Will Anna and Callie discover who murdered Arthur or will Callie’s detective boyfriend and Anna’s self-appointed protector put a stop to such aspirations?

Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu, but make sure to bring your own baker, because Anna’s a bit preoccupied at the moment.

Warning: This is NOT your mom’s cozy mystery. Bring Your Own Baker may be a ‘clean’ read, but if gangs, illegal gambling, and pimps make you turn your nose up at your e-reader, you might want to skip this one. Although you’ll be missing some sizzling chemistry between Anna and her protector. Not to mention a whole bunch of witty dialogue.

Synopsis Self-Serve Murder:

Kristie is kind with a capital K, so it’s quite the surprise when she wakes up next to a dead man with no recollection of the previous night. Even worse? She’s naked. Kristie may be a sweetheart out to save the world, but sticking her nose into an investigation of rapes across campus makes her the target of a murderer. Before she knows it, Kristie is smack dab in the middle of a murder investigation with her colleagues Callie and Anna. If that’s not enough to drive a sane person up the wall, a friend has decided he’s going to keep her safe whether she wants him to or not. And, oh yeah, he’s her man and that’s that.

Come join us at Callie’s Cakes, where murder investigations are on the menu. You are most welcome, but you may need to serve yourself as our barista Kristie is busy trying to save the world.

Warning: Although there are plenty of moments that will make you shake your head and laugh at the antics of the ladies of Callie’s Cakes, the subject matter – rape on college campuses – is very real and somewhat darker than your usual cozy mystery.

Author Spotlight – Toni Pike

Photo Toni PikeWelcome!

Please introduce yourself.

I’m an Australian who grew up in suburban Sydney and studied Veterinary Science at Sydney University. Later I taught high school, and then spent over a decade in the public service involved with the regulation of veterinary medicines. My husband was an Air Force officer, so we lived in England, America and several Australian cities while we raised two lovely children. Now we live in beautiful Canberra, the national capital.

I love to spend time with family and friends, take long walks every day and travel overseas. Cruising has taken me to places I never thought that I would see, including the Panama Canal, Petra in Jordan and the Orkney Islands in Scotland.

  1. When did you start writing?

English was my best subject at school and I read many of the great classics in those early years. My love for writing developed throughout my adult life. One great training ground was a stint as a contract writer, producing plain English guides for farmers. Writing has been an important part of my life, a very obsessive hobby, for more than twenty years.

  1. What motivates you to write?

Writing seems to be that one thing that I feel constantly motivated to pursue, that I can work at all day without noticing the time. The world of indie publishing has captivated me because of the opportunities it provides for rapid turnover and control over every aspect of the creative process. The onus is on me to ensure that my work is edited and ready for publication, and then to do my own marketing.

  1. What genre do you write in and what made you chose this particular genre?

I love reading high-octane adventure stories and thrillers. About eighteen months ago, I decided to take on the challenge of writing a page-turner. My priority was to ensure that the hero kept encountering no end of trouble, so that my readers would always want to know what happened next. I created a religious conspiracy, a subject that I’ve always found fascinating. There are dark secrets, mysteries, a hidden sect and a sinister Brotherhood that have all lasted for two thousand years. My hero is an Anglican priest who finds himself in trouble. In The Magus Covenant, he races from Italy to England and Sweden. In The Rock of Magus, he travels to Rome, Spain and England. That allows me to draw on my travel experiences.

  1. What is your goal in writing? Do you have dreams where your writing should take you?

My goal is to keep my readers entertained and keen to find out what will happen next. I hope to develop a wide readership, and that people will take my stories with them on vacation or wherever they go to relax. I feel delighted when I read a good review or hear a positive comment from a fan.

  1. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and if yes, how do you deal with it?

I have a personal antidote to writer’s block to help avoid the pain of staring at a blank screen, unable to proceed any further . I plan my stories in full and write a detailed story outline. That includes the creation of all my characters, with names, appearance, careers, motivations and background. I also do any other research and gather information about all the settings and locations. When I start to write each chapter, I know exactly where I am headed. Luckily, I’ve always been able to stay focused and write for hours. The greatest challenge for me is the initial conception and construction of the storyline.

  1. What advice would you like to give new, hopeful authors?

To be an author is a difficult and generally unrewarding road with rejection a normal part of life. If you are determined to take on the challenge of writing a novel, then learn all you can about fiction, including the conventions of your chosen genre, story structure and ways to improve your writing. There is a very support indie community online, and endless information available on how to develop your characters, write effective dialogue and plot your storylines. The only way to improve is to learn all you can, practice and never stop writing.

After you finish your first draft, it is then time for re-writing and editing. If you decide to follow the indie route, be sure that your book contains no typographical or spelling errors and is perfectly formatted. Be willing to listen to any advice or suggestions.

Having mastered your art and published that first novel, you will then need to market it. That is probably the most challenging aspect, unless you are already an expert. If possible, long before publishing your work, you should establish your own website and develop your own online identity.

  1. Please, tell us about your work.

The Magus Covenant was the first book in the Jotham Fletcher Mystery Thriller Series. The second book, The Rock of Magus, has just been released. They are non-stop action thrillers, but at their core is a religious conspiracy that has lasted for two millennia.

In The Magus Covenant, we meet Jotham Fletcher. He is in Rome to give a lecture but soon finds himself caught up in non-stop danger and drama. Here is the description:

The fate of the world is in the hands of one man and the covenant holds the key.

The Reverend Jotham Fletcher is in Rome to give a lecture on his PhD thesis about Simon Magus at the church where he fell to his death beside the Roman Forum. Magus was a cult leader mentioned in the Bible and his libertine sect disappeared by 400 AD.

But did it really die out?

A robed man is pushed from the bell tower of the church at midnight and Jotham becomes the prime suspect. His lover Antonella, an expert on ancient documents, has a shocking secret. Rumors fly about a papyrus scroll that mentions Magus. A ruthless Catholic Brotherhood will stop at nothing in their hunt for the Simonian Sect. And a reclusive billionaire has the chance of a lifetime to get his revenge.

The Rock of Magus has Jotham Fletcher is in peril once again, and this time he senses that there is trouble brewing inside the Vatican. Once again, the future of the church is in the hands of one man. Here is the description:

At last the Magus Covenant can be fulfilled.

Jotham Fletcher returns in another action-packed thriller that takes him to the heart of the Vatican. Cardinal Alpheus has ambitions far more sinister and explosive than anyone could imagine and the death of Pope Linus is only the beginning.

Jotham is now a billionaire, dedicated to finding the Simonian Sect that wants to destroy the Christian Church and he employs Madena, a former army officer, to help him. They rescue a televangelist in Seattle but find the photograph of a cardinal who is soon elected as the new Pope, with Alpheus as his chief advisor.

The deadly Brotherhood re-emerges with homicidal Father Dominic at the helm and the body count begins to rise as he flees to the Vatican to seek protection.

Jotham becomes the prime suspect in the murder of an archbishop in Spain and the unwitting hero after a devastating event in Rome. He has a secret that he dare not reveal and is on the run from the police once again. But nothing prepares him for the final confrontation at the Pope’s summer retreat in Castel Gandolfo.

Thank you for being my guest. It was such a pleasure to have you here!!

Thank you so much, Aurora, for inviting me here today.
