Every day, millions of people are publishing blog posts.

Most of them fail to attract many readers. This is because they lack the essential elements to get a high ranking on search engines.

When you spend all the time and effort to write a blog post, you want people to read your blog.

The quickest way to get some readers is to promote your new blog post on social media. In the short term, it is useful. You might attract a few hundred people to read your post.

Depending on which social networks you use, you could get some shares and likes and if you are lucky, a few comments.

But after a few days on Facebook or Twitter, your great post will be off the radar and lost forever.

The only way to attract long-term traffic to your blog is to start writing for man and machine.

Or in other words, for readers and search engine crawlers.

But don’t panic at the thought of learning how to use search engine optimization (SEO).

In this article, I will give you some simple tips that you can use to help you improve your blog content. At the same time, they will help you find new readers.

Just In Case You’re A Blogger Running Out Of Ideas

One of our most popular blog posts from the past few years was called 50 Blog Topics for Fiction Writers. I had a conversation with a fiction writer who said, “I write fiction – why would I need a blog? What on earth would I write about?”

That conversation inspired the blog post. And from the response that we got, it was a question that many fiction writers were asking as well.

For years I’ve heard from publishers, agents, and authors that they didn’t think blogs were necessary for fiction writers. I 100% disagree.

Blogs provide three important benefits for authors:

1) Value. A blog, podcast, video blog – whatever medium you want to use – is still the best way to show readers (and potential new readers) the author’s writing style, and it provides a long-form medium (relative to social media posts) to develop deeper interest and intrigue into their new book.

2) Traffic. A blog is the best way to drive traffic from social media back to the author’s website, which makes them, their book, and online presence more visible by helping with search engine rankings and social algorithms.

3) Connection. We don’t want readers to stay on social media – we want to drive them to the author’s website. A blog is the best way to deepen the connection between an author and their readers.

The purpose of a blog isn’t for a writer to talk about themselves. The purpose of a blog is to provide content that speaks to their ideal reader.

If you’re a fiction writer and you haven’t seen success with your blog, I would like to pose a question:

Are you using your blog as a means of promotion or to connect with your ideal readers?
If you want your blog, social media, book marketing, and so on to work, you have to come at it from the perspective of your ideal reader.

One thing I never knew about blogging when I first started was how time-consuming and how much hard work needed to be put into it.

When you first start blogging, you pretty much start off with nothing. It’s just you, your computer, and WordPress. You don’t know what to write about, you don’t even seem to have anyone listening. Not right away, at least.

You don’t need anything to start blogging. All you need is a few ideas and your will to get started and continue.

Still, the more you blog, the more you connect with other bloggers, and the more you research, you learn a lot. You realize there’s a lot out there to aid in your blogging.

Blogger Tip 02 – How to Reduce the Number of Images Required in Your WordPress Media and SAVE STORAGE SPACE…

WP TIP 1

If you use more than one image in your posts, then use WordPress Publicize to automatically upload your post to Twitter, Facebook, etc, or, manually upload them, the image last inserted into your post, is the one that will be displayed on your media.

To avoid the wrong image being displayed, either:

Insert it LAST

OR

Select it as your ‘Featured Image’

Authors especially would probably prefer their Book Cover being displayed, rather than some other, random, image.

WP TIP 2

If you opt for using a Featured image, or, have the same image appear more than once in your post (as I’ve done on this post):

You DO NOT NEED to upload the same image for each separate appearance!

Select the same image to be inserted wherever you want it to be shown in the post.

This will save taking up unnecessary space in your media…

Have you been using images that are VERY LARGE, and/or, PNG Format?

Have you been reblogging and noticed how LARGE, some folks make their images?

Running out of space in your WordPress Media Storage and thinking about paying for more?

Unless you are displaying your own images / photos, and WANT to have them full size

Before you spend any money, go through your Media Storage images and reduce their sizes

You might be shocked at how much longer you can work with the storage space you save.

Step 1:

Select an image and click on it to see it’s size (width x height in pixels)

and

how much it ‘weighs’ (i.e., how many KB or MB it is):
