Interview With Author And Cover Designer Kathryn Jenkins

Welcome!

We know each other for a while now. I know you are not only a very gifted writer, but also an excellent graphic designer and book cover designer.

I know there’s much more, and I’d like to hear about that.

1. When did you start writing?

It is hard to say when I started writing. I remember writing short stories back in elementary school, but that was more for fun than anything. If I had to say professionally, my best guess is when I was in high school. I had a big love for books and you never would see me without one. After living in so many worlds I finally started creating my own.

2. What motivates you to write?

This is a hard question. I guess what motivates me to write is the sheer joy of it. My characters have been like family or close friends for several years now. I know them inside and out. If it comes down to it, I trust in them more than in real people most of the time.

3. What genre do you write in and what made you chose this particular genre?

My chosen genre is fantasy and several sub-genres. I have several works in progress that range from an Epic Fantasy to a Paranormal Romance. So, far I have only published a short story and a few smaller works, but I working on my first novel. I have know idea when the day will come when I will finish it, but I hope it will blow peoples minds away.

4. What is your goal in writing? Do you have dreams where your writing should take you?

My number one goal of writing is to finish my WIP, the Silver Ryder Legacy series. I have been dreaming up this world for so long, I just want to see it finished. It would be nice to make enough money writing but I don’t ever want to lose the enjoyment I get from it.

5. When did you start your education in graphic design?

I started my education back in January of 2013. It was more of a moment of fate. You see I started out in Mass Communications out at Briar Cliff University, with just a minor in Graphic Design. The idea was to just have a few back ups in case my chosen field didn’t work out. I ended up falling in love with Graphic Design, so I switched the two. Then in December of 2015, I graduated with a Bachelors in Graphic Design and a minor in Mass Communications.

6. Was there a particular time when you felt the need you would like to design book covers and is there anything else you are working on, except book covers?

This one is a hard question. I think my need to do book covers started with my love of writing and reading. I always loved the artwork on book covers, so when I started graphic design and realized that it had a hand in publishing books. I didn’t hesitate at all to jump in full force.
Right now I am working on writing my Silver Ryder Legacy series and being a mom. I have been a mom for a little over a year. The big obstacle I have been faced with is balancing all projects. However, if it takes years to write my series, it will be well worth it in the end.

7. Please, tell us about your work. What is the part you like the most about designing?

What can I say about my work? Hmmm…I would say that I try to make something unique each time I create a piece/cover. Using stock images makes it difficult sometimes, but I try to do things different. I am always trying to get better at different aspects of designing. I have been looking into how to take my hand drawn illustrations to digital art, so I plan to make that jump here in the near future.

The thing I like most about designing is creating a piece of art that captures peoples eyes. I love the fact that I can do it for books, especially indie authors. I aspire to bring each author a cover they visioned, rather than making them settle for something because of price.

8. Would you tell us more about what will happen next within your career?

I am hoping to turn my design business into a full time career. That way I can make my own schedule, spend time with my twin boys and write when I want to. My big step, as I stated before, is to start illustrating covers. I just need to figure out my own design process for it due to it being more complex.

9. You told me about your promotion, what is it about?

In August I plan to have several promotions going on, through my website and social media sites. The #1 promotion is my EBOOK PACKAGE GIVEAWAY. This giveaway will run from August 1st till the 31st and the lucky winner will walk away with the EBOOK PACKAGE that is priced at $199.

The #2 promotion that will be going on will be my FALL SAVINGS EVENT! This will take 40% off, on all custom cover packages offered through my site, KJ Magical Designs. Authors can even prebook slots for services to lock in the savings price.

Don’t Judge A Book By Its Cover

… and still, we all do it, right? I’m not the exception to the rule either. Often I catch myself judging a person I don’t know because I don’t like her jacket. But I don’t know what happened to her that her jacket looks as ragged as it does.

But let’s stay within the literary world. Like so many other writers and readers, I love spending time in bookstores. I browse through the shelves and aisles, and occasionally I pick one, turn it around and start reading the blurb on the back.

My eyes fly over the shelves, and once in a while, they are caught by a particularly attractive and intriguing book cover. If I don’t like the cover, I don’t even bother reading a blurb, means I might miss a few good books, just because my eye isn’t attracted to the books’ cover.

Over the years I saw a few very interesting and eye-catching covers, and by a couple, I was quite fascinated.

Now, these five here, are only a few that impressed me and my eye in particular. To some of you, they might be weird, sad or even boring. This blog post and these covers are my taste.

I love how the designer mixes color and the trace of antique and ancient. It’s not often we discover a new book with an ‘old’ cover.

I love the colorful simplicity of the book cover. It seems to be one simple compass needle, but I was drawn in when I saw this cover.

Designer team:

Bob Giusti (illustration)
Amy Hill (lettering)

This I call a perfect symbiosis between illustration and lettering. It can’t get any simpler than this, any darker, any more impressive – and any scarier.

I cannot even tell whether this book cover is ‘intriguing’ or repelling… but it definitely is fascinating. And in combination with this book title it has a lot to say.

Cover designer: Anne Jordan

The cover caught my eye immediately. Why would a reader and writer like me not be intrigued by a turning page? I briefly looked at the book and found that I had to add it to my growing pile of books I need to read.

Are there covers you like? And I know, I got a lot to learn and many people to meet, cover designers amongst them. Who do you know, being a cover designer or illustrator and designed the perfect cover for your book?

Or what book cover do you particularly love?

THE DEFINITIVE SELF-PUBLISHING CHECKLIST ~ For People Who Aren’t Very Organised and are absolute beginners.

Thank you very much, Evie Gaughan, for publishing the ultimate self-publishing checklist! We really appreciate it! (In particular a beginner like me!)

Evie Gaughan

The definitive

You just hit publish, right?  That’s what all the articles say.  Any idiot can upload a book in minutes.  And yes, I suppose any idiot can, but it takes a very informed, dedicated, professional and talented individual to upload a book that people will want to read.  A recent Facebook post from a first-time author seeking advice made me realise how long I’ve been doing this self-publishing thang and how I’ve kind of taken for granted that everyone has ‘the knowledge’.  There are so many blogs, articles and how-to books on the subject, and yet authors can still struggle with the basics.  The first author asked what she should be doing in the run up to her launch and another suggested that while there is a lot of information out there, it’s almost overwhelming.  Where do you start?  Where does it end??  So in an effort to share said knowledge, I’m writing…

shadow-stalker-writerWelcome

1. When did you start writing?

I’ve always loved telling stories, but I didn’t start writing until I was in my mid-twenties. English was not my best subject in school, so it just never occurred to me to write my stories down. But in college I took a creative writing class and my English instructor suggested I consider getting my work published. That’s when I started considering writing as a career.

2. What motivates you to write?

I have a very overactive imagination. I used to make up stories as a kid just as an outlet. Now writing is my outlet. When I don’t write, I actually suffer from anxiety and start having very strange (often scary) dreams.

3. What genre do you write in and what made you chose this particular genre?

I’ve loved reading fantasy since I was a kid, so when I started writing it was naturally the genre I wanted to write. My writing has a darker side to it, and I don’t write the common sword and sorcery type fantasy. The magic in my stories has more shamanic leanings.

4. What is your goal in writing? Do you have dreams where your writing should take you?

My main goal is to build up enough of an income to support my family solely with my writing. I’d love to have more than that, but that would just be a bonus. I also love entertaining people and just want people to get something from what I write. I’ve had stories I’ve read really change the way I look at the world. It would be amazing to affect someone in that way (for the better, of course).

5. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and if yes, how do you deal with it?

I wouldn’t call it writer’s block exactly. I have Hashimoto’s Disease and sometimes I suffer from brain fog. That makes writing difficult because I can’t concentrate long enough to put ideas to paper. Thankfully that doesn’t happen too often, but when it does it can last weeks or months sometimes. The only thing I can really do is try to write as much as I can. Even if I only write a paragraph a day in times like that, at least it’s something.

6. What advice would you like to give new, hopeful authors?

Start building your platform before you publish your first book. That involves setting up a website and/or blog and getting involved in social media and writing groups. Get to know your potential readers and let them get to know you as a person first and an author second. Also, set up a newsletter. Even if you haven’t published a book yet, maybe you can write an exclusive short story you can offer as an incentive to sign up.

7. Please, tell us about your work.

For the last couple of years, I’ve been self-publishing a dark fantasy serial called Shadow Stalker. It’s about a young shadow stalker, Auren, who is being hunted by the Galvadi Empire because they believe she will enslave the people of their world. She has to stop their tyranny while proving to herself and others that she’s not the danger they believe she is. The first book, Shadow Stalker Part 1 (Episodes 1 – 6) is available free from my website: http://reneescattergood.com
