How to show the emotions of non-viewpoint characters – Written By Louise Harnby

Louise Harnby published a fascinating article about the emotions of non-viewpoint characters and how to show them without screwing up. Thank you, Louise!

Non-viewpoint characters have emotions too.

But how do we show them without head-hopping?

The answer lies in mastering observable behaviour.

Another Form Of Writing – Love Letters

Humans are able to feel so unbelievably strong emotions: Love, hate, reflux…

                                                                                                                     – unknown –

When did we stop writing love letters? When was the classic ‘love letter’ a relict of the past?

In my opinion, technological progress has not only killed a lot of our ability to communicate but also our ability to write, maybe to be romantic…

Where did these little notes go?

From what I hear, nowadays, people send each other texts. They start dating, sending texts, women are hurt when their love interest doesn’t text back within five minutes, the rate of misunderstandings within text messages is enormous, and often couples argue by text, and at the end, break up by text. It’s so much easier to send short messages, than to say what we feel… or: in this case, to write it down.

I recommend picking the right stationery. It doesn’t have to be pink with hearts… but tasteful and a bit romantic.

You don’t have to be a writer to express honest feelings by writing them down. When you’re not sure about grammar and spelling, please hand the letter over to someone you trust to correct your letter. There’s nothing worse than your love interest roaring with laughter about your ‘meestakes.’

Maybe you might refrain from rhyming, in particular when you’re not used to writing poetry. In a love letter, it’s important to be true to how you feel and not try to impress.

**

I would walk on my knees in front of you

show you how much worship I can do.

Your heart, it pulses, it feels like a shock

in accordance with my …. uhm… soul.

**

And no, this is definitely not a verse for your love letter. (Unless you have a really humorous partner, of course).

Write what’s deep in your heart. Express what’s in your head, let the other one know that he/she is important to you. There is a choice of words that are important for your letter:

dream, feel, sense, love, thinking, love, heart, missing

Feel free to add more words to the list, in particular, important ones… they don’t need to have to be important to us, but to you – and your loved one.

Maybe you know each other for a while; maybe you are a couple already and have gone through a lot with each other, or maybe you want to tell someone how you feel? It doesn’t matter. As long as you express your deepest emotions and be honest, your letter is going to touch your recipient’s heart and soul.

Let me give you an example… a letter, addressed to someone who wishes to start a relationship, expressing affection and hope.

*****

Dear …..

We met through a phone call. When I particularized my situation, you immediately consented to help me. What a big heart you have! You didn’t have to, and still, you supported me. You were always there for me! We talked, and our conversations brought us closer.

We met a bit later personally, and that meeting only confirmed that I found who I was looking for, someone to trust, someone to feel safe with, someone to hope…

Our conversations, these endless, wonderful, humorous, and informative conversations… I cannot deny I’m addicted to these conversations. I love talking to you, I love hearing your voice, I love hearing your laughter, and when we don’t talk, I miss you… and I wish, one day, I would hear the same from your lips.

I wish I could hear the birds sing with you, I wish I could listen to the rain with you, I wish I could see you soon, I wish, I wish, I wish… you are someone special. I hope, one day, I will be able to tell you that, without embarrassment or humiliation, without any awkward feeling, but with a warm smile,  and maybe with a hug.

With all my heart

XXX

I know, this is far away from  Do you love me, yes/no/maybe. But it is clear, honest, and emotional. And that’s what you want when you write your love letter.

(Of course, you can hire someone to write your love letter. And yes, I do that occasionally, even though it’s not cheap). But that isn’t how it should be. A big part of a love letter is that part that you send with your words: your heart, your tears, yourself.

Good Luck!

Soul Taker Secrets: Interview With Nathan – Who Is He And Do We Meet Him Again?

To the readers of ‘Soul Taker,’ Nathan is a known character. He only shows up briefly at the beginning of the story. He takes Katie’s spot when she accepts her new tasks as a Guardian.

If you haven’t read ‘Soul Taker’ yet, it is time to read: I added the universal link where the book is available.

https://books2read.com/u/m2roOj

Below you will find an interview with Nathan. Read it and find out more about an Angel we only know by name – and by a perfectly tailored suit.

Excerpt from ‘Soul Taker’:

He looked over my shoulder, and I turned around, watching two beautiful looking men walking toward us. One of them was dressed in a suit and tie and looked elegant and chic like a businessman. The other one wore old jeans, cowboy boots, and a long-worn leather coat.

Joseph smiled. He introduced me to the business-like guy. “This is Nathaniel. He’s your replacement and will take your job over from here.”

The Guy shook my hand. “Please, call me Nate,” he said with a laugh.

Hello Nathan. It is great seeing you again. How are you doing?

Hello AJ. Nice to see you too. I’m doing okay. Unfortunately, I’m far too busy. Sometimes I wish I had more time off.

We know you took over from Katie when she wanted to become a Guardian and met Raphael.

Yes, I did. I was quite surprised to hear the two fell in love. I was invited to their wedding but unfortunately couldn’t go because of an emergency.

Why were you surprised? From what I hear, Katie is breathtakingly beautiful, and Raphael, from what I heard, has celebrated quite some success with the ladies.

Yes, but we were taught that it is almost impossible for an Archangel to find his consort.  Raphael found his consort, and now we all are curious to see who of the Council Of Twelve is going to be next.

How about you? Is there someone special in your life?

I admit, there is someone I love. But I am not permitted to talk more about all that, remember? You told me to keep my mouth shut about that.

(Oh, yes. *AJ laughs* I forgot)

But now, tell us a little bit about you. Who is Nathan?

I am a Soul Taker, as you know. I have been one for about a millennium. I pick up souls and take them to their respective final destinations. Usually, it is Heaven, but occasionally I have to take them to the gates of Hell. Rarely we Soul Takers are attacked by the other side who try to steal the soul we are working with.

Now, we know Katie got tired of doing this job for three hundred years. Aren’t you tired out by that job?

Well, Katie and I are two completely different personalities. She is younger than I am, for one thing. Also, she is quite emotionally sensitive. I could easily imagine that a soul she takes to the portals of the Underworld is trashing, crying, regretting, screaming, is almost breaking her heart.

And we shouldn’t forget: We are taking all kinds of souls… not only bad ones, not only good ones, and in particular, we do have to pick up innocent souls too. That was very hard on Katie.

I had to harden my emotions and heart against this kind of compassion, or I could never have done that job to my satisfaction and the satisfaction of my bosses.

We met you briefly in Katie’s story. And now we learned a bit more about who you are. Are we going to meet you again?

Yes, you will meet me again. You will learn more about me. Just be a bit patient. I’ll be back.

Thank you so much for dropping in as my guest today, Nathan. We really appreciate it.

Thanks for having me. It was my pleasure.

Moodboard Of My WIP

I’m currently drafting book 7 in ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series. It is quite some work. By a list of blog post ideas, I felt challenged to publish a mood board of my work in progress, using 9 pictures. It took me forever to decide what the most important parts of the plot are and how to express them. Then I had to pick the images and, of course, spend another few hours to choose the ones I think express best the feelings of the story.

This is the mood board of book 7.

I hope I could give you an impression of how the emotions will be within this book, caused by the story and the plot.

This is the first mood board I ever created. I’m curious to read in the comments what you think about it.

A very special water drop

***************************************************************************************************

Among humankind there’s one thing rife

It’s given to all, it’s hard – and it’s ‘life’.

Some, they say: “Do best you can”.

And others state: “Follow your plan.”

**

The most important thing for us

more than food, embrace or a buss

is liquid, clear, without a taste

We need to drink, to wash and not to waste.

**

It’s valuable, nothing we can miss

It’s life, it’s blood, it’s more than bliss.

Easy to guess what I talk about

Of course it’s water, there’s no doubt.

**

It’s found in springs, in ponds, in lakes,

It’s hidden in rain and in snowflakes.

But there is much more and that is rare

The drops we hold or so we dare.

**

Humor, it can make us laugh

when we tease and when we chaff.

Holding our belly, unable to quit

and roar with laughter at a wit.

**

That’s one moment we produce

that amount of water, a priceless juice.

It’s rare and still it is unique

when it leaves the eye runs down our cheek.

**

Even more invaluable is the other sort,

caused by pain, by fear or even tort.

To hurt someone no matter who

is cruel and mean – we know that’s true!

**

That water drop which caused by pain

is all the worse when shed in vain.

No diamond on Earth will be able to pay

for this one drop shed that one day.

**

It’s hope that dies and confidence

it’s joy been killed by no more chance.

Emotion directed by grief and fear,

and loss that caused this…

… one…

… sad…

tear.
