What’s The Best Free Passive Voice Checker? – Written By Derek Haines

Derek Haines provides us with a list of the best free passive voice checkers online. Thank you very much, Derek.

Are you looking for a reliable passive voice checker?

That’s an excellent idea. You should always avoid using the passive voice in writing as much as you can.

But sometimes it isn’t easy to spot when you are doing a quick proofread of your text.

A much easier, and more accurate way to locate a passive sentence or passive construction is to use an online checker.

There are many free online tools you can use to help you. The bonus is that many of them will help you find other grammar errors and spelling mistakes as well.

You always need free images for your blog or social media sites

The days of using Google Image Search to find images to download is over. Apart from the quality aspect, there are problems with the ownership of images indexed by Google.

If you want photos for personal and commercial use, you need to make sure that the images you use are copyright free.

You should also check if there are any attribution required notes on the image licence.

Most royalty free images have a Creative Commons licence.

Operation F.E.C.A.L: New Publishing & The High Cost of FREE – Written By Kristen Lamb

FREE! For the love of all that is chocolate, free us from FREE! *takes soothing breath* I’ve been blogging for over ten years, a witness to the terrifying and extraordinary changes in publishing.

Initially, I was NO fan of self-publishing because entropy is alive and well…even with books. I knew once we opened Pandora’s Publishing, there would be no turning back.

Sometimes I really hate being right.

Amazon (and others) weaponized on-line shopping and launched us into an age of FREE, EASY, CHEAP, ACCESSIBLE and LEGAL.

Or, as I like to call it—Operation F.E.C.A.L.

Amazon wanted to implode traditional publishing. Their goal was to dominate on-line retail and raze the big-box model in order to make room for new brick-and-mortar Amazon stores (smaller and smart-stocked using algorithms). What better way to obliterate publishing than by handing out author participation trophies?

Yet, there have been plenty of consequences. Namely, LOTS of F.E.C.A.L. material out there.

A lot. *swats flies away*

It began innocently enough…

Copyright Infringement, 403 pirated book offers blasted.

Diana Wallace Peach gives us an excellent advice on “Blasty” and how to use this service. Thank you so much!

Myths of the Mirror

“It only takes one click to copy and republish a creator’s original content without his permission.” – Blasty

Back in July, Debby of dgkayewriter and Damyanti of Damyanti-writes both mentioned a new online service called Blasty.

Blasty allows writers to sign up their books, and then continually monitors Google for infringing copies of content. Each suspect link is flagged to the writer’s dashboard, and the writer is given the opportunity to “blast” (eradicate) the link from Google with a simple click! No paperwork, no cease and desist notifications, no time-consuming and frustrating dealings with pirates.

Intrigued, I signed up. In four months, I’ve blasted 403 copyright infringements on 8 books.

Per Blasty: “Each time you click on “Blast,” a copyright removal procedure under the DMCA (Digital Millenium Copyright Act) is automatically initiated, resulting in the complete elimination of the infringing webpage  from Google on a worldwide basis. Since Blasty has been approved…

90 sites to advertise your book

James Calbraith has provided us with a blog post that contains links to 90 Sites to advertise our books. Thank you so much James! Your work and generosity is greatly appreciated!!

James Calbraith

kindle

As far as I’m aware, this is the most comprehensive list of book promo sites anywhere on the internet. The list was compiled from various online sources, most notably – Rachelle’s Window (go there and thank her! 🙂 she also lists Alexa rankings for the sites) and my own research. As of updating this on April 17th 2016, all the links below are working. Note that I can’t guarantee that the sites themselves are still working, that the forms lead anywhere, or that you will actually get anything for your money.

Majority of these sites advertise books when they’re free, as part of KDP Select or Smashword promo. If you want to promote a paid book, you usually need to pay extra.

Don’t forget you can also promote your tweets and Facebook posts on Twitter and Facebook, though that is known to be not very effective unless you know…

shadow-stalker-about-the-author

Renee Scattergood lives in Australia with her husband, Nathan, and daughter, Taiya. She has always been a fan of fantasy and was inspired to become a story-teller by George Lucas, but didn’t start considering writing down her stories until she reached her late twenties. Now she enjoys writing dark fantasy, and she’d dabbling with paranormal thrillers under a pen name.

She is currently publishing her monthly Shadow Stalker serial, and she has published a prequel novella to the series called, Demon Hunt. She is also working on a new series of novels, A God’s Deception.

Aside from writing, she loves reading (fantasy, of course), watching movies with her family, and doing crafts and science experiments with her homeschooled daughter. Visit her site for more information and a free copy of Shadow Stalker Part 1 (Episodes 1 – 6): http://reneescattergood.com

shadow-stalker-writerWelcome

1. When did you start writing?

I’ve always loved telling stories, but I didn’t start writing until I was in my mid-twenties. English was not my best subject in school, so it just never occurred to me to write my stories down. But in college I took a creative writing class and my English instructor suggested I consider getting my work published. That’s when I started considering writing as a career.

2. What motivates you to write?

I have a very overactive imagination. I used to make up stories as a kid just as an outlet. Now writing is my outlet. When I don’t write, I actually suffer from anxiety and start having very strange (often scary) dreams.

3. What genre do you write in and what made you chose this particular genre?

I’ve loved reading fantasy since I was a kid, so when I started writing it was naturally the genre I wanted to write. My writing has a darker side to it, and I don’t write the common sword and sorcery type fantasy. The magic in my stories has more shamanic leanings.

4. What is your goal in writing? Do you have dreams where your writing should take you?

My main goal is to build up enough of an income to support my family solely with my writing. I’d love to have more than that, but that would just be a bonus. I also love entertaining people and just want people to get something from what I write. I’ve had stories I’ve read really change the way I look at the world. It would be amazing to affect someone in that way (for the better, of course).

5. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and if yes, how do you deal with it?

I wouldn’t call it writer’s block exactly. I have Hashimoto’s Disease and sometimes I suffer from brain fog. That makes writing difficult because I can’t concentrate long enough to put ideas to paper. Thankfully that doesn’t happen too often, but when it does it can last weeks or months sometimes. The only thing I can really do is try to write as much as I can. Even if I only write a paragraph a day in times like that, at least it’s something.

6. What advice would you like to give new, hopeful authors?

Start building your platform before you publish your first book. That involves setting up a website and/or blog and getting involved in social media and writing groups. Get to know your potential readers and let them get to know you as a person first and an author second. Also, set up a newsletter. Even if you haven’t published a book yet, maybe you can write an exclusive short story you can offer as an incentive to sign up.

7. Please, tell us about your work.

For the last couple of years, I’ve been self-publishing a dark fantasy serial called Shadow Stalker. It’s about a young shadow stalker, Auren, who is being hunted by the Galvadi Empire because they believe she will enslave the people of their world. She has to stop their tyranny while proving to herself and others that she’s not the danger they believe she is. The first book, Shadow Stalker Part 1 (Episodes 1 – 6) is available free from my website: http://reneescattergood.com

Free Authors Tools: Blurb Preview & Yasiv

Author Nicholas Rossis provides us with an excellent post about Free Author’s Tools, Blurb Preview and Yasiv. Thank you for this helpful information, Nicholas. We appreciate your efforts!

Nicholas C. Rossis

I have two useful (and free) author tools to share with you today, courtesy of authors John Logsdon and MM Jaye respectively.

Amazon blurb preview

Author tools: Amazon blurb preview | From the blog of Nicholas C. Rossis, author of science fiction, the Pearseus epic fantasy series and children's books Author Central’s formatting toolbar

I’ve often shared on this blog my support of Amazon. Despite its occasional missteps, the company has leveled the playing field for Indie authors and is busy changing the publishing industry on a daily basis. It is consistently client-centric in its approach and has invested heavily in making the shopping experience as pleasant and flawless as possible.

Which is why I can’t fathom why it’s so hard for it to build a proper, user-friendly blurb builder.

In effect, there are two separate ways of posting your blurb: the first is to do it through your book details on KDP. This has the benefit of allowing you to use some basic html tags; namely: <b><br><em><font><h1><h2><h3><h4><h5><h6><hr><i><li><ol><p><pre><s><strike><strong><u> and <ul>. However, it lacks any…
