A. J. Alexander is a talented classical musician who has won several music contests in her youth. She is an accomplished skier and loves to swim, amongst other sports.

She works for a global corporation as a part of the management team and travels a lot, also internationally.

A.J. Alexander lives in Southern California with her three beautiful active and demanding cats. In her rare free time, she loves to meet friends or go for long nature walks.

A. J. learned reading and writing at the age of four and realized quite early in her education that she loves painting pictures with words. During her school time, she won poetry as well as short story contests. Later on, she participated in writing and poetry workshops to learn the craft. During her time at university, her education as a writer turned toward creative as well as journalistic writing. A. J. published several poems and short stories under a pen name.

Currently, she is working on ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series, her first book in the series, ‘Soul Taker’ was published December 15, 2018, the second book, ‘Sundance’ is on the market since August 2019 and the third book in the series will be published in spring 2020. Writing fantasy books has always been her dream, and she looks forward to sharing her work with her audience. The need to write a novel had been nesting in her head for quite some time.

A.J. Alexander descends from an internationally extended, politically and entrepreneurially active family and was privileged to enjoy an excellent international education. In her spare time she volunteers for charity events, fights for animal rights and when needed serves as an interpreter to help great causes.

So now, let’s get into my interview.

What is the first book that made you cry?
Oh, I remember that day as it was yesterday. In the book, I read there was this beautiful, strong black stallion supporting our hero, and the horse died. I cried hot tears.

Does writing energize or exhaust you?
If it would exhaust me, I’d not be a writer.

What are common traps for aspiring writers?
The ‘need’ to become published as quickly as possible. Within that process, they just ‘leave out’ a few steps and don’t have a book at the end but some amateurish, poor result of a sloppy but fast project.

Do you want each book to stand on its own, or are you trying to build a body of work with connections between each book?
In a way both. I am working on a book series, ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series. But I don’t want people to be ‘lost’ when they have the chance to buy book three in the series, I still want them to feel comfortable with the book and enjoy the read without the feeling of having missed something they should have read. I’d like each book to stand on its own as well as being part of the series. That’s my dream.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?
Start networking earlier.

How did publishing your first book change your process of writing?
It did slow my process down since I had to take far more time for marketing now.

What was an early experience where you learned that language had power?
I think I was about ten years old when I realized how powerful words are. Ever since then I tried to use them wisely. As much as they hold – they also can kill.

Do you base your characters on real people?
Not entirely no. Some of my characters do have certain habits, speak in a particular manner of people I know or resemble them a bit. But my characters are fictional and that’s how I like it.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?
Six. Book 4 to 8 and an additional few stories in the series are either with the copyright lawyer, with the editor, I’m still working on them or are waiting until I pick up my work on them.

How many hours a day do you write?
That depends on what else I do. I cannot live off writing – I do have a job.

What did you edit out of your most recent work?
That was a part I like very much while I drafted the book. But during my work to type the draft into the computer, re-reading that paragraph, it just seems enormously awkward and does not really belong there anymore. I therefore deleted the entire paragraph.

Boy, have I been there, AJ. And it just kills you to have to do surgery on something that sounded so good when you write it, too.

How do you select the names of your characters?
First I pick names that I think match the character’s look. I search for them online, important to me is normally the meaning of the name and the origin. If I find the first names I like, normally I pick about 12 to 15 names, then I start doing the very same thing with the last names. After that, I start limiting the lists to the six or seven I like the most. I list the first names on the left, the last names on the right side, then I ‘connect’ the names that sound the best to me and combine the perfect meaning for my character. And that will be the name.

What are you working on now?
Currently, I work on ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series and usually I work on several books at once. For example, I type in the drafted book seven right now – to the same time I write additional stories and book 8.

Who is your favorite author?
There are so many talented authors, it is very hard to pick one.

What is your all-time favorite novel?
Shogun

In what genre do you write?
Young Adult Fantasy/Paranormal Romance

10 Reasons Readers Unsubscribe From Newsletters – Written By Nate Hoffelder

Have you ever wondered why people keep unsubscribing from your newsletter? Nate Hoffelder wrote an interesting blog post about it. Thanks for this very educational and helpful article, Nate! I read it carefully. It explains a lot – but it does not explain why nobody subscribes. 😀 (just kidding!)

If there’s one problem that everyone with a newsletter shares, it’s not knowing why readers unsubscribe. While it is normal to lose a few subscribers every time you send a newsletter, I have been told (and can confirm from personal experience) that if you are losing more than a half of a percent of your mailing list after sending a newsletter, you have a problem.

It might be that you are emailing too often (or not often enough), or your subscribers might be getting bored with your newsletters. They might also be bothered by political rants, or by proselytizing, or if you engage in a lot of hard sell tactics.

Each former subscriber has their own reason leaving your mailing list. (Who knows, they might just be too busy to read all the mail they receive?) It’s impossible to say why someone is losing subscribers without examining the specifics of their mailing list, but I can give you a bunch of possible causes to consider.

Back in May I asked my newsletter subscribers and authors in the FB groups SPF Community and 20Booksto50K a simply question: “What would make them unsubscribe from a newsletter?”

I received several hundred answers, and I collated the responses for this post.

Marketing – Sundance “on Tour”

After I had published ‘Soul Taker’, I found a link to The Good Ebooks & Books Company online, which offers book ads, free as well as paid ones. I checked it out, and it seemed a decently long-existing way to advertise my book. I tried it with the free version.

Since ‘Soul Taker’ was accepted in a quick and uncomplicated way, I decided to try and set up the second book in the series, Sundance.

Once again I filled in the form online and got another polite and friendly email, confirming my submission and telling me that they’ll get back to me as soon as possible.

After only a very short delay I received the information that ‘Sundance’ is online. Of course, they were telling me what advantages a ‘premium’ account would have, but I didn’t get the impression they’re telling me: “Either you’ll upgrade or…”

“Good E-Books” connects authors and readers. They placed ‘Sundance’ in the middle as a New Release. They set it up with its cover picture, the blurb and linked it to its Amazon page.

Sundance Got Its Second 5-Star Review

I’m so very excited to see that Sundance got its second 5-star review. I’m happily smiling my day away. 😀

Having read the first of this series “Soul Taker” I knew we were being introduced to new worlds and adventures and looked forward to the next installment. And I can safely say this second book in the series did not let me down. If anything I felt it really helped things take off even more.

Where in “Soul Taker” we were introduced to an existing angel who gets promoted from Soul Taker to Guardian, this time we see the beginnings of a angel’s rise. Born to parents who made a deal with God for a child, if even for only a short seven years, we watch young Cara grow not only in the mortal world, but in the next one as well. In Heaven she is given the name Sundance, and begins to learn her strengths and grow in skills to the point of being welcomed into another rank of Angels a “Warrior”, one of the first in a very long time.

But for all her skills and abilities, which have impressed even the Archangels, she still has much to learn. Her first assignment will take her back to Earth where she will experience not only pain, but love with a mortal. Is such a thing allowed?

You’ll have to read to find out the answers to that. But there is much more awaiting both the reader and Sundance. For her powers and skills have been noticed not only by higher authorities, but ones below as well. And soon she finds herself the focal point in a dastardly plot from the netherworld.

The author has done a brilliant job with this book in many respects, including uniting both her first and second books with a brief, but satisfying meeting between our former Soul Taker, and this new Warrior Angel. I very much look forward to more of this series which is just beginning.

Sundance got its first 5-star review! This is so exciting I’m enthusiastic!

“wonderful”

REVIEWED BY: LINDA TONIS
MEMBER OF THE PARANORMAL ROMANCE REVIEW TEAM
When Cara’s parents begged and prayed for a child they were given a daughter but they had to make a deal, the child was on loan for only seven years at which time she would be taken away. Cara’s parents revealed everything to Cara just before her seventh birthday and when she turned seven she woke up in the School of Divine Army with Archangel Michael as her teacher. Her eleventh and final year she was an angel warrior the first in nearly three hundred years. Six years later she took her final exams and became a warrior master ready to fight evil and be given a name. Since she loved to dance in the sun her name was Sundance.

Her first assignment was at a castle in Germany where seven warriors lived and where someone in the castle was a spy trying to pull the warriors down to the dark side. The warriors were human but assisted time and again helping the angels in their fight against the monsters from Hell. Unfortunately when Sundance arrived is was to be greeted by demons who attacked her and managed to poison her with their blood. She was saved by one of the seven warriors, Anaan and from the minute he brought her back to the castle and to his room he wouldn’t let her out of his sight. He carried her anywhere she had to go and they fell in love. Their relationship was platonic but very real.

Sundance went on missions and trained and returned to Anaan whenever possible and then she discovered that he was taken to Hell and tortured and she knew she had to help him. What she found when she saw him was a man she loved but who was unrecognizable, bleeding, tied to the bed in his room that he had trashed and when she touched him she knew that there was still a demon residing inside him. What happens to him is something you will have to find out for yourself.

Sundance begins to display powers that surprise even the oldest, most powerful archangels and she is brought before the Council of Twelve. She was convinced that she was there to be punished but that was not so, she was rewarded and given more powers. The Council knew about her falling in love with a human and had no problem with it but eventually Anaan would need more than what she could give him.

Sundance was an amazing character and fought time and again against evil until one fight was one fight too many. As an angel she didn’t die but what happened I will not reveal. The book ends with a cliffhanger with a lot of unfinished business and a lot of unanswered questions but in spite of that and the fact that the book ended with “To Be Continued” I still loved it.
