Sundance got its first 5-star review! This is so exciting I’m enthusiastic!

“wonderful”

REVIEWED BY: LINDA TONIS
MEMBER OF THE PARANORMAL ROMANCE REVIEW TEAM
When Cara’s parents begged and prayed for a child they were given a daughter but they had to make a deal, the child was on loan for only seven years at which time she would be taken away. Cara’s parents revealed everything to Cara just before her seventh birthday and when she turned seven she woke up in the School of Divine Army with Archangel Michael as her teacher. Her eleventh and final year she was an angel warrior the first in nearly three hundred years. Six years later she took her final exams and became a warrior master ready to fight evil and be given a name. Since she loved to dance in the sun her name was Sundance.

Her first assignment was at a castle in Germany where seven warriors lived and where someone in the castle was a spy trying to pull the warriors down to the dark side. The warriors were human but assisted time and again helping the angels in their fight against the monsters from Hell. Unfortunately when Sundance arrived is was to be greeted by demons who attacked her and managed to poison her with their blood. She was saved by one of the seven warriors, Anaan and from the minute he brought her back to the castle and to his room he wouldn’t let her out of his sight. He carried her anywhere she had to go and they fell in love. Their relationship was platonic but very real.

Sundance went on missions and trained and returned to Anaan whenever possible and then she discovered that he was taken to Hell and tortured and she knew she had to help him. What she found when she saw him was a man she loved but who was unrecognizable, bleeding, tied to the bed in his room that he had trashed and when she touched him she knew that there was still a demon residing inside him. What happens to him is something you will have to find out for yourself.

Sundance begins to display powers that surprise even the oldest, most powerful archangels and she is brought before the Council of Twelve. She was convinced that she was there to be punished but that was not so, she was rewarded and given more powers. The Council knew about her falling in love with a human and had no problem with it but eventually Anaan would need more than what she could give him.

Sundance was an amazing character and fought time and again against evil until one fight was one fight too many. As an angel she didn’t die but what happened I will not reveal. The book ends with a cliffhanger with a lot of unfinished business and a lot of unanswered questions but in spite of that and the fact that the book ended with “To Be Continued” I still loved it.

Don Massenzio’s second Frank Rozzani-novel is available as an audio book. This is amazing! I read the entire Frank-Rozzani series and I’m eagerly waiting for the next one! These novels are great!

I am proud to announce that my book, Let me be Frank, has been released in audiobook format. This is the second book in the Frank Rozzani detective series.

Here is a synopsis:

A young girl is senselessly murdered. The police believe the murder to be a random homeless casualty until it is discovered she has ties to Fat Sam and his mysterious past life in the Big Easy.

Featured Author – Interview – The Return Of Yecheilyah Ysrayl

Welcome back!

You were a guest on ‘Writer’s Treasure Chest’ before, where we learned about writing in your life and your projects.

Let’s see what you can tell us today:

1. Are you still writing in the same genre as you did before, and if not, why did you switch – or would you ever think to change genres?

This question is so interesting because I’ve been thinking a lot about genre. I find as an Indie Publisher one of the challenges is having to sort of “categorize” yourself. While I’m still writing Historical Fiction, I am starting to understand I am more so into Literary Fiction specifically. I say that because I am only interested in a certain kind of Historical Fiction. I love history across the board even though I didn’t like it in school, but when it comes to reading history in a fictional form, my real interest is in the so-called Black experience mostly. For this, I think I’ll start to use Literary Fiction more if I had to “categorize” my work. I don’t like being boxed in though so I’ll definitely change genres depending on what story I write.

2. Please, tell us a little about your writing process.

I don’t have much of a process. Every book I write is different and takes me on a different journey. The best answer I can give is that as I am writing the first draft and the story is flowing, sometimes I come upon a scene that requires me to stop and research. Now I know what they say when writing the first draft just write. Well, I can’t. At least not when I need information to finish a scene. Usually, I do my research separate from writing but when it comes to the creation of a scene that requires me to know more to write about it, I have to stop. Even if it’s just the first draft because I know how that scene looks in my head and what is required for it to be put down on the page. And I can always go back and perfect it later (during revisions) but before I can move on, I’ve got to be able to at least finish that scene.

For example: In Revelation, Book Two of The Nora White Story, there are new characters being introduced and one such character is named Red, Nora’s love interest. I was reading Malcolm X autobiography as I was writing book two so that’s where the inspiration for his name and some of his characteristics comes from. Long story short, Red is a numbers runner. A numbers runner is someone who collects policy slips and pays winners in a form of lottery called policy banking or as it was referred to by blacks in Harlem, the numbers game.

As newcomers to Harlem, Southern blacks like many northern-born African Americans, encountered racial and job discrimination and were unable to secure industrial jobs. Most labored in unskilled jobs and received less pay than their white counterparts. Under these socioeconomic conditions, African Americans developed diverse and creative responses to employment discrimination and economic disparity like rent parties and policy banking, a form of gambling that you would recognize today as the lottery. Playing the lottery is legal today, although illegal when poor black people were doing it.

3. What is important to know for young, new authors and writers?

Young and new authors and writers should pay attention to themselves. What I mean is, understand the power of your individuality, what sets you apart and how to infuse this self-identity into your writing. Inspiration is cool, motivation is exciting and publishing books is OK but without a knowledge of self, discipline, and endurance you won’t get very far. People will always tell you how it should be done and it is wise to listen to advice for sure. It is also wise to stay true to yourself, your personal mission as well as your contribution to the world. Only being who you are makes you different and set apart to everyone else and that’s what really makes your work what it is. If you really think about it, every book is essentially the same. It is the author/writer that makes it different.

4. Your experience in the writing world, do you think it has already taken you where you wanted to go?

No. In fact, I don’t know if I’ll ever get to where I want to go but I do know that I’ll be guided to where I need to be if that makes sense. I don’t like the idea of having “made it” or having obtained success because it means you must stop at some point and I do not intend to stop if it is Yah’s will. For me, life is about stepping stones and milestones. At some point, I’ll reach a milestone or accomplish a certain goal that I have wanted to achieve but I do not intend on stopping if it is in my power.

5. In your opinion, are you a writer or an author – and what is the difference for you?

I am both because in my opinion there is no difference. While an author would technically be published, I believe the journey is all encompassing. If I believe I’m a published author then I am even before I publish a book. Being a writer is just that, you write. Whether it means you publish books, write blog posts or research papers, you’re a writer. Being a writer can encompass many things and does not have to be restricted to writers of books. Maybe you publish articles. That makes you an author and a writer just the same.

6. Please, tell us about your projects again. Was there progress since the last interview or are there even completely new projects?

Yes, ma’am. I am working on quite a few projects, not all of which I will list here because we’ll be here all day.

Briefly, I am releasing a novel very soon which I am most excited about. Renaissance Book One in The Nora White Story. We follow Nora White as she attempts to follow her dreams of being a writer during The Harlem Renaissance Movement and the realities she is facing as she struggles to understand more about the difference between the Jim Crow South and the not-so-different North. We also follow her parents, Gideon and Molly White in their struggle to overcome their own pain in their search for their daughter who has left home without a word.

As I am preparing to release this book I am also revising Revelation which is Book Two in the series with hopes of getting it out by the close of the year.

Thank you for being my guest. It was such a pleasure to have you here!!

Thanks so much for having me. It is an honor.

Renaissance: The Nora White Story (Book One)

When seventeen-year-old Nora White successfully graduates High School in 1922 Mississippi and is College bound, everyone is overjoyed and excited. Everyone except Nora. She dreams of Harlem, Cotton Clubs, Fancy Dresses, and Langston Hughes. For years, she’s sat under Mr. Oak, the big oak tree on the plush green grass of her families five acres, and daydreamed of The Black Mecca.
The ambitious, young Nora is fascinated by the prospect of being a famous writer in The Harlem Renaissance and decides she doesn’t want to go to College. Despite her parent’s staunch protest, Nora finds herself in Jacobsville, New York, a small town forty-five minutes outside of Harlem.
Shocked by their daughter’s disappearance, Gideon and Molly White are plagued with visions of the deadly south, like the brutal lynching of Gideon’s sister years ago. As the couple embark on a frightening and gut wrenching search for Nora, they are each stalked by their own traumatic past. Meanwhile, Nora learns that the North is not all it’s cracked up to be.
Can Gideon and Molly overcome their disturbing past in time to find their daughter before it’s too late?

Coming July 15, 2017

“The author really did her research, touching on the feud between Zora and Langston over a play written by both, but only Zora was given credit. The way she wove Nora into the middle of the feud was genius. It was reminiscent of Forrest Gump a bit.(That, in my world is a HUGE compliment – I love Forrest Gump)”
–          Lisa W. Tetting

“When I finished reading Renaissance: The Nora White Story I actually shouted. I loved, loved this book. From beginning to end. The characters are still alive inside my mind. The setting as well. I could smell the hot soup the girls had or the rain on the hot earth. The dialogue is superb; I can still hear the soft southern accent in my mind.”

– Adele Marie Park

“The author did a fabulous job of inserting the fictional Nora White into the historical time period. The story flips between Nora’s family back home and her experiences in New York. It was a great storytelling technique because the reader was able to grasp the stark differences in life between the two geographical locations while realizing the specter of racism existed everywhere. I also liked the fact that the characters spoke with the typical speech patterns of the time. From a historical perspective, it was like experiencing time travel to another era.”

– Colleen Chesebro

“First of all, let me say that I’m loving your book so far. The voice (yours/Nora’s), imagery, dialogue, and overall literary style remind me of Toni Morrison’s and Zora Neale Hurston’s. Damn, girl! You’re giving me goals!”

– Nadine Tomilson

Featured Author – Interview – The return of Renee Scattergood

Welcome back!

You were a guest on ‘Writer’s Treasure Chest’ before, where we learned about writing in your life and your projects.

Let’s see what you can tell us today:

1. Are you still writing in the same genre as you did before, and if not, why did you switch – or would you ever think to change genres?

Yes, I am, but I’m dabbling more with other speculative fiction genres as well. All dark, of course. I think my stories will always have that element of darkness to them.

2. Please, tell us a little about your writing process.

All my stories begin with a character. Most of the time it’s the main character, but with Shadow Stalker, Kado was the first character I created and the world and everything else was built around him even though he wasn’t the main character. Once I have a character in mind, I just place them in situations in my mind and I let the world and everything else come together in my imagination around that character.

Once it’s cemented in my mind, I begin writing down the ideas in no particular order. From there, I plan basic details about other characters, the plot and the world. I don’t go into too much detail because I like to let most of the details develop with the story. From there I create a simple world map and timeline so I get everything in order and other minute details (such as distance and direction) right.

Then I start creating the scenes, write an outline from that and begin writing. The actual writing has many step, and I suppose you can say some of those steps would count as editing, but for me it’s still writing. My first draft is nothing more than a skeleton. It reads more like screenplay. When the first draft is finished, I go back and fill in details. That’s where I change the telling to showing and bring the story to life.

3. What is important to know for young, new authors and writers?

No matter what, don’t ever give up. Even when it seems hopeless, just keep writing. No one who has ever kept at it has ever failed. It might take years, but eventually you’ll get there.

4. Your experience in the writing world, do you think it has already taken you where you wanted to go?

I’m still in the middle of my journey. Honestly, it’s a journey I hope never ends. When I reach one goal, I’ll set another so I always have something to strive for. Right now, I’m aiming to reach a point where my income from book sales is enough to support my family. From there… who knows?

5. In your opinion, are you a writer or an author – and what is the difference for you?

I’m both. A writer is someone who writes. It’s that simple. An author is someone who has written and published a story, essay, article, etc. So, really, even someone who has a blog is an author. I’ve always had a hard time understanding why people complicate those terms.

6. Please, tell us about your projects again. Was there progress since the last interview or are there even completely new projects?

Well, my Shadow Stalker serial is ending soon. The last episode will be released in September and the Bundle will be released in November. I’ve begun work on my next serial, which will be about the origin of the shadow stalkers. The episodes in that one will be shorter (about 3k to 4k words), but I’ll be releasing a new one every two weeks. Each season will have 22 episodes and at the end of each year, I’ll release a bundle of all the episodes from that season.

I’m also publishing short stories more regularly now and working on my first novel series.

Thank you for being my guest. It was such a pleasure to have you here!!

Excerpt #1:

Makari stirred the contents of the pot that held our evening meal. “Now is probably not the best time for exploring.”

“No. I know. I was just thinking that maybe one of these tunnels might lead to the camp.”

“They might, but we have no idea which ones, and we’re more likely to get lost.”

I was only partially listening to them. One of the tunnels seemed to stand out more than the others. It seemed brighter even though I knew it couldn’t have been. And voices whispered in my mind as if encouraging me to go there. “I can find the way, but it will take several hours of hiking.”

“You’ve been in these mountains?” Makari asked.

“Well, Kado and I did come up here a few times, but not this mountain specifically. We went further north.” I sighed. Now was just as good a time as any to tell him. “My powers have returned. I drank the water from the Black Lake and after that something happened. I can access the shadow world again, but it’s different now. Everything feels different.”

“Different how?”

I shook my head. “I can’t explain it.”

Excerpt #2:

“You’re sure you know what you’re doing?” Jade asked, nervously.

This had been her idea and now that she realized how narrow and dark the tunnels were, she didn’t feel as confident.

“Yes. I’m absolutely sure.”

It wasn’t long before we came to the first fork. I paused to examine both tunnels. Even with the torch light, one tunnel stood out brighter than the other. The voices seemed louder now too as I headed down the left tunnel. I was on the right path. Every time we came to a fork, it was the same.

“We seem to be going down. You’re positive this is the way?” Makari asked.

“Yes.” I closed my eyes a moment and I could see the tunnel laid out before me in my mind. “It starts going up again a short distance from here, but it’s going to be a pretty steep incline.”

After another twenty minutes of walking, I paused at the bottom of the incline.

Makari seemed stunned. “How are you doing this?”

“I have no idea. It’s as though something is guiding me.”

“I hope it’s something that wants to help and not something that wants to get us lost or killed,” Jade said.

Excerpt #3:

I didn’t have time to reflect on what just happened. Makari was still in danger. I moved closer to him, right on the edge of the veil. I felt the tingling of the beryllonium’s effects. Strangely, I suddenly felt stronger. I needed to get Makari back into the shadow world before that trooper came to his senses and returned. If I could wrap myself in the veil, maybe I could do the same for him.

In my mind, I imagined the veil like a blanket. I pushed it out and manipulated it so that it surrounded Makari.

He sat up, looking around. Are you doing this, Auren?

Yes, I sent back.

When he regained some of his strength he shifted and joined me in the shadow world. We returned to the cavern.

“What did you do? How did you do that?” Makari asked.

“I’m not sure. Somehow, I was able to affect the trooper’s thoughts. I convinced him that you weren’t a threat and he left. Then I wrapped you in the veil to nullify the beryllonium’s effects.”

Makari shook his head slowly then gazed at me. “Could you do that again?”

Excerpt #1:

Kado closed the distance between us. “Auren, I’m taking you from this place. You can either come or your own free will or by force.”

Tamir tensed next to me. I held my hand up to stall whatever he was planning. I didn’t need this turning into a fight, especially in front of Jade. Physically she was healing well, but her mind was still fragile.

“If I go with you—“

“If?” Kado arched an eyebrow.

“’If’ I go with you, we have to take Jade as well, and you have to promise me you’ll return her to Deakan on Appolia before we return to the Dark Isle.”

“It’s not possible, Auren. You can give birth any day now. Makari will keep Jade safe for the time being.”

Jade grabbed tightly onto my arm.

I stood my ground. “I won’t leave without her.”

________________________________________________________________________

Excerpt #2:

“Let’s move,” he whispered.

He turned towards the mountains to lead us on a more difficult path. So much for taking the easier route through the pass. It wouldn’t likely slow the dogs, but it might slow their handlers and the dogs wouldn’t stray far from them. By the time we started up the mountain, the dogs were getting closer.

“Keep going,” Kado told me. “I’m going to lead them away from you and I’ll catch up.”

Kado strode off. Jade watched him with panic in her eyes.

“Don’t worry. He’ll be back soon,” I assured her.

“Yeah, but what if they come after us?”

Excerpt #3:

Jade rested her hand on my shoulder and gave it a squeeze. “It must have been hard realizing you knew nothing about who you really were.”

“It was, but at the same time at least I finally understood why Kado was so protective of me. Even then, the Galvadi were hunting for me. And I didn’t make it easy for him. He was trying to keep us off their scanners, while I was doing everything possible to gain some freedom.”

“That’s pretty scary. I wonder if you ever came close to being captured even then.”

I shrugged. “Kado never said anything, but then he’s not one to rehash the past unless there’s something to gain from it.”

Jade sighed. “Does Kado hate me?”

She turns herself over to the Galvadi to get close to Drevin and Makari has no choice but to play along. He is forced to either torture Auren to prove his loyalty or die knowing she will be tortured and enslaved anyway. Somehow, they must get close enough to Drevin to bring him down and put an end to the Galvadi’s tyranny once and for all.

Episode 13: Defiance

Three years have passed since Auren and Shai escaped the daily torture of the Galvadi. With Makari’s help, they have learned more about the Galvadi’s technology and discovered ways to overcome its effects on their power, which gave them an edge in the war. However, the Galvadi have spent that time developing new technology that could mean the end of the shadow stalkers.

Episode 14: Falling to Pieces

Things go from bad to worse after Cali is captured by the Galvadi. The new technology they have employed is making a rescue attempt impossible and endangering the lives of all the shadow stalkers. Auren refuses to give up though, but the more she tries to fix thing, the more Kado tightens the leash.

Episode 15: Into My Own

Just when Auren thinks she’d had enough of Kado’s overbearing and overprotective nature, he surprises her by apologizing and admitting he had been wrong. Auren finally accepts that she is not at fault for Cali’s death after visiting her in the shadow world, but Kado and Makari are still preventing her from confronting Drevin. They don’t feel she is ready, and Auren is beginning to believe they will never let her fulfil her destiny. It’s time she takes matters into her own hands.

Episode 16: A New Emperor

Makari is told the only way he can prove his loyalty is by torturing Auren, but he refuses to go through it. So Jharak, Drevin’s master interrogator, took the liberty to be the one to break her, but in the end, it would take forcing her to watch him torture and kill Makari.

Episode 17: Allies to Enemies Part 1

Excerpt – Episode 13: Chapter 1 (feel free to use all or part of the excerpt)

Cali gave me a nudge as she took a seat next to me. “Do you have any idea what’s going on?”

“No idea,” I said, moving over a few inches so she had space to sit between me and Shai on the log someone had converted into a bench.

Shai slung an arm around her cousin and Cali returned the gesture, then wrapped her free arm around me. I smiled at her. Cali was the only one who had helped me maintain my sanity over the years. It drove me crazy never knowing what was happening to Makari. Kado kept me busy, as usual, but any time I had a free moment, all I could do was wonder if he was safe. I would know if he died. I would sense him again in the shadow world. He had been blocking me to keep me safe, though I had no idea how it was supposed to help. All it did was make me want to go to him, which would be more dangerous.

Of course, Kado would never allow that. He saw my thoughts as I had them most of the time, and he would know as soon as I made the decision. I learned quickly not to allow my thoughts to go down that path too often. That’s where Cali came in. She distracted me by helping me forget the war and making me feel like a normal person once in a while. She was as good a friend as Jade, except she didn’t encourage me to disobey Kado when I was angry.

“Maybe the Galvadi have decided to give up,” Shai said, pulling me out of my thoughts.

Cali snorted.

“I know. It’s wishful thinking.”

I smiled at Shai. “I want this to be over too.”

“You’ll figure it out soon.” Cali gave my shoulder a squeeze.

All the shadow warriors knew the end of the war would not come until I stopped Drevin. The only problem was I had no idea what I was supposed to do, and no amount of training helped. Each day it seemed like I was further from my goal instead of closer.

After everyone had taken their seats, Kado held up a hand calling us all to silence. “Makari has just given me some disheartening news. The Galvadi have developed a—”

I tried to listen, but I couldn’t get past the fact that Makari had been here. “He didn’t even bother to see me?”

Kado glared at me, and I suddenly realized I’d blurted it aloud.

“Makari has to keep a low profile for his own safety, and they were not aware he had left. He couldn’t stay away long.”

“I think it’s time he left the Galvadi all together,” I said, folding my arms over my chest.

“It would be the healthier option,” Cali added on my behalf.

“Makari’s work has been invaluable to us, and would not be possible if he weren’t living among them for the time being,” Kado said, then leaned in my direction looking straight into my eyes. “And he knows what he is doing.”

Kado watched me, and I was sure he was waiting to see if I would continue to interrupt him. I remained silent, but neither he nor Makari would be able to convince me the man I loved wasn’t taking an unnecessary risk. They could get whatever information they needed from their missions.

When he was sure I wouldn’t interrupt again he finished explaining that the Galvadi had developed a new recinder and how it worked. “You will need to avoid capture at all costs. Once these recinders are placed on you, there is no known way to nullify its effects even after removal. Auren, I want you to visit Makari’s unit to steal the schematics, and if possible, one of the recinders along with any other information you can find about new technologies. Makari suspects there is more, but they are keeping him in the dark.”

I stood quickly, smacking my hands together. “When do I leave?”

“Wait a moment. I have other things I need to discuss with you first.”

I sat again, hoping I wasn’t in for one of his long lectures.

“The rest of you are dismissed. Sephir, you and Shai are clear to leave on that special mission you’ve been training for as soon as you’re ready, but please be careful.”

“We will,” Sephir said, bowing.

I leaned over Cali to give Shai a quick hug. Cali wrapped her arms around both of us. Shai stood as soon as we released her, and Sephir, who had been standing next to her, wrapped an arm around her as they headed off.

“Good luck,” Cali said, winking at me before following Sephir and her cousin.

Kado sat next to me. “Auren, you have been the most adept at overcoming the effects of the beryllonium. That’s why I’m sending you on this mission, but you need to be extra careful this time. Makari believes even you wouldn’t stand a chance with this new recinder. If they are looking for test subjects, they may also have new ways of detaining shadow stalkers that Makari might not be aware of. If you are discovered, do not take any risks. Makari will not be able to help you. You will need to leave immediately. Understood?”

“Yes, Kado. I’ll be fine.” I only just managed to stop my eyes from rolling.

“I’m serious, Auren. We can always return later, but if you are captured, you may be lost to us for good this time.”

The fear in Kado’s eyes sobered me. Things came easily to me now that I had completed my training, and though I had discovered abilities not even Kado had known about, I wasn’t foolish enough to believe I was all powerful. Sometimes my foster father seemed to worry more than he should, but I was beginning to think that wasn’t the case here.

“I’ll be careful, Kado. I promise.” It wouldn’t hurt to pay Makari a little visit too if he was alone.

Kado gripped my arm and tilted my head with his free hand so I was looking directly at him. “Under no circumstances are you to seek out Makari. If you attempt something so foolish, Auren, you will be punished and banned from future missions.”

My shoulders sagged. “It was an errant thought, Kado. I will focus on my mission.”

“The mission and nothing else, Auren. This is important.”

I nodded and averted my eyes. I just missed him. That’s all it was.

“I know you miss him, Auren, and that it’s been hard for you both to be apart, but it won’t be forever. You and Makari will have your time in this world if the shadow people will it, but not if you risk both your lives on foolishness.”

“I know. I’m sorry.” Makari was being the more foolish of us both, and yet Kado supported him. It didn’t make sense, but whenever I brought the subject up with either of them, they redirected the conversation.

Kado pulled me into a tight hug and whispered, “Come back to me in one piece, please.”

I returned his embrace. “I will.”

EXCERPT

Maggie’s Montana

Excerpt from Chapter 20

I squeezed my eyes tight as chills ran down my spine. A gentle hand rested on the nape of my neck. The touch grounded me and for a split second, I thought maybe it was my father. Tears welled and I pressed the palms of my hands into my eyes, trying to stop the longing I felt for my dad who’d left me years ago. I saw Chloe perched on John’s hip with her arms around his neck in my mind. It seemed like eons since I was that little girl in my own father’s arms.

Through the tears, I stared at my dusty boots. John ran his fingers up my neck and into my hair. I squeezed my eyes tighter, hoping this wasn’t a dream.

John knelt beside me, his hand on my knee, and his finger under my chin. “Saw you leave. Wondered if you were all right?”

I shrugged. Cocoa ran past, and then nestled in the straw at my feet and stretched out, letting her kittens suckle. “No, guess not,” I said.

“Anything I can do to help?”

I scooted over on the bench and John sat beside me. “I don’t think so.” I tucked my hair behind my ears.

“Well I think there is, but I’m going to let you solve your own dilemma.”

I wiped the corners of my eyes and watched the kittens nuzzle up to their momma’s belly, safe from the world around them until she went out to hunt. “Probably best.” Locking my elbows, I rested my hands on my knees. I liked the feel of worn blue jeans, inside, and out.

“Dinner is almost ready,” John said.

Our gazes met. My stomach wasn’t the only thing growling. “I don’t know if I want dinner. I kind of like it out here.” The barn truly was a sanctuary.

“Well, you’ve got to eat, darlin’.” John wrapped his arm around my shoulder and drew me close, his green eyes trying to hide his own disappointments.

I couldn’t help but think I was one of them.

“A girl your age can’t live on s’mores and beer, ’cause that’s what we’re having later.”

“I beg to differ.”

John’s breath brushed up against my neck. His lips followed. Tension oozed from my shoulders like dripping wax, my guard giving way to the heat. He whispered in my ear, “Let me love you.”

I swallowed the temptation, but it stuck in my throat and lingered at the back of my tongue like bitter sweetness. “I don’t know how.”

Afraid, I prayed again. From under my lashes, I saw a man earnest and true, his eyes fixed on me yet not demanding, something I wasn’t used to. Flecks of passion danced in his irises.

“How the hell do you know what you want?” I asked.

“Because I know,” he said.
His strong hands held my face. His thumbs stroked my cheeks like he was settling a skittish filly. “Let me ask you this, neighbor lady . . .”

“Why do you keep calling that?”

“Does there have to be a reason?” he asked.

“Isn’t there a reason for everything?”

“No. Sometimes things just feel right.” John kissed me as I took in his words, his breath in sync with mine. My stomach rolled over and I let myself kiss him back as if it were the very first time.

But will Jake be strong enough to let go of ghosts from his past? And, in this friends-to-lovers story, will Marley learn to trust that Jake just might be her very own Christmas miracle?

marmalades-release-excerpt

Jake woke to an empty bed, and he startled up. Where was she? He tugged on a pair of sweats and a shirt, and left the bedroom searching for her.

What he found both surprised and pleased him.

“You’re up early,” she said, grinning at him with that breathtaking smile. She was sitting on the cushions in front of the fire, sipping a mug of something warm, reading one of his mother’s old romance novels. Marmalade was purring on her lap, and the Christmas Tree, the only other light besides the crackling fire lit up the room. “I found hot chocolate in the kitchen,” Marley said.

Jake took the mug and sniffed it. “Oh, this won’t do. Give me a sec and I’ll make you something amazing.”

He got up to go make the drinks, and Marley followed him. She watched him like a hawk as he simmered heavy cream, cinnamon sticks, and carved a big block of dark chocolate. “The secret is in not letting the cream reach a full boil.” He turned to the pantry and pulled out a bottle of Baileys Irish Cream. “And Baileys, of course.”

He poured the steaming elixir into big cheerful Snowman Mugs, added a shot of the liqueur, and then stirred a striped red and white candy cane in each mug. “Merry Christmas.”

She took one sip, and her eyes rolled back in her head. “Oh, Holy Night, this is incredible.”

He laughed, and sipped his cup too. “Pretty tasty.”

“I love this time of year, you know. It’s as if this one week, everything is perfect. Unblemished. Full of possibilities.”

She had a chocolate mustache from the drink, and he reached in and touched her upper lip. “You got a little something right there…”

She giggled. He swiped his tongue across the chocolate on her lips. He groaned. Her soft full lips tasted even better with chocolate on them. “This is turning out to be my favorite week this year too.”

She blushed, and her whole face turned holly berry red. Her delicately curved neck too. He took the mug from her hands, set it down, and backed her up to the granite counter. He kissed her properly, thoroughly, deeply.

She sighed, so he knew he’d gotten it right. The tingly taste of peppermint and chocolate on her tongue instantly became his favorite new treat. “Mmm…”

The kitchen heated up with their kisses, but a few moments later she pulled away and said, “We should go check on the mares, and their babies.”

marmalades-release-about-the-author

I write books.

Books where romance, fantasy, and suspense collide.

Born and raised in Savannah, Georgia, where Spanish moss whispers tales in breezes from the Atlantic Ocean, as a child I soaked in the sunshine and heritage of cobblestones, pirate lore, and stories steeped in savory mysteries of the South. I graduated with honors from both Armstrong Atlantic State University, and Georgia Southern University.

I live in the mountains now with my husband, but honor my southern heritage as a storyteller by sharing high heat adventures in romance fiction with readers.

What’s in it for you?

A reward. Treat yourself to an entertaining diversion from your daily routine by reading my stories. You’ll find themes like, justice does exist, love is worth fighting for, and happily ever afters are expected.

marmalades-release-interview

Welcome!

Please introduce yourself.

I’m Paula Millhouse, and I write stories where romance, fantasy, and suspense collide. Do visit my website for more about me.

  1. When did you start writing?

At the age of 13. My friends and I used to exchange stories on the way to class.

  1. What motivates you to write?

I’ve always loved stories. Getting my romances out there to people who need to read them motivates me.

  1. What genre do you write in and what made you chose this particular genre?

I write romance. I’ve dabbled in fantasy romance, romantic suspense, and now contemporary romance. I love Happy Ever Afters, with smart heroines and sexy heroes – that’s what made me choose the genre – or did it choose me?

  1. What is your goal in writing? Do you have dreams where your writing should take you?

My goal is to bring joy to my readers. I want to entertain them for a few hours, take them out of their day, and give them a feel-good escape from reality. I think every writer dreams of the New York Times – when I get there I want it to be because I gave my readers stories they love, and share with their friends.

  1. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and if yes, how do you deal with it?

The only way to deal with writer’s block is to write through it. Pinterest helps. Nature. Listening to music. But all these things are distractions – if you’re blocked, your story needs you more than ever.

  1. What advice would you like to give new, hopeful authors?

Join your national organization – for romance it’s Romance Writers of America. Take some classes. Find some writer friends. And write your stories!

  1. Please, tell us about your work.

Visit my website for more information on all my stories.

Thank you for being my guest. It was such a pleasure to have you here!!

Thank you for having me today, and featuring Marmalade’s First Christmas! I hope your readers enjoy the story as much as I enjoyed writing it.
