About the Book

Description:

It’s the calm before the storm, and the storm is closer than Auren thinks.

Auren is successfully using her ability to control people’s minds and actions to take over Nadiria and finally bring an end to the Galvadi Empire, but there is a catch. The more she uses that power, the more she loses herself to it.

If she can accomplish her mission quickly, it will reduce the chance of that happening. The allies she has found are helping her move things along, but there’s a lot of work to do and horrors that Auren has not yet discovered that will make controlling herself nearly impossible.

Her friends and allies are growing concerned over her unpredictable violent actions, and Auren knows her time is running out.

About the Book

Living under the tyranny of the Galvadi Empire is torture, but Auren is determined to end the nightmare, regardless of the cost to herself.

Auren is once again a prisoner of the Galvadi on Nadiria, or at least that she wants Emperor Zavix to believe. It’s the only way to get close enough to him to kill him and then take control of the people.

To succeed in her mission, she must push her new power to the limit, but the more she uses her it, the more addictive it becomes. Unfortunately, stopping is not an option, but if she can focus on her goals, maybe she won’t lose herself.

Scheduling can be Relaxed and Still Effective! #TimeManagement – Written By Renee Scattergood

I discovered an excellent article on time management on Renee Scattergood’s blog. Renee is a Dark Speculative Fiction author who published the ‘Shadow Stalker’ books. Thanks for a very educational post, Renee.

One of the biggest obstacles I have (and I’m sure you do as well) is time. Since I can’t stop the clock and give myself the time I need to get things done, I have to make the best use I can of the time I have.

It’s not an easy thing to do when you have a special needs kid who has to be homeschooled due to medical issues who requires much more attention and help than most kids her age. It’d nearly impossible to find time to get things done when I want to write, but I also have a home to run. Then throw my own health issues into the mix, and forget it.

When my daughter was little, I had given up trying. I just couldn’t seem to find the time or energy to keep up with everything. I refused to give up completely though. Writing is something I truly love, and I want to make a career of it. The last thing I wanted was to look back on my life and regret never giving it a go.

So I found ways to work around all my obstacles, including time!

The most effective way to manage time is to have a schedule, but schedules have never worked for me. There are too many variables in my day to stick to one. I never know when my daughter is going to need me for something, so I can’t plan for those, and she has to come first before everything when it comes to her mental health.

Featured Author – Interview – The return of Renee Scattergood

Welcome back!

You were a guest on ‘Writer’s Treasure Chest’ before, where we learned about writing in your life and your projects.

Let’s see what you can tell us today:

1. Are you still writing in the same genre as you did before, and if not, why did you switch – or would you ever think to change genres?

Yes, I am, but I’m dabbling more with other speculative fiction genres as well. All dark, of course. I think my stories will always have that element of darkness to them.

2. Please, tell us a little about your writing process.

All my stories begin with a character. Most of the time it’s the main character, but with Shadow Stalker, Kado was the first character I created and the world and everything else was built around him even though he wasn’t the main character. Once I have a character in mind, I just place them in situations in my mind and I let the world and everything else come together in my imagination around that character.

Once it’s cemented in my mind, I begin writing down the ideas in no particular order. From there, I plan basic details about other characters, the plot and the world. I don’t go into too much detail because I like to let most of the details develop with the story. From there I create a simple world map and timeline so I get everything in order and other minute details (such as distance and direction) right.

Then I start creating the scenes, write an outline from that and begin writing. The actual writing has many step, and I suppose you can say some of those steps would count as editing, but for me it’s still writing. My first draft is nothing more than a skeleton. It reads more like screenplay. When the first draft is finished, I go back and fill in details. That’s where I change the telling to showing and bring the story to life.

3. What is important to know for young, new authors and writers?

No matter what, don’t ever give up. Even when it seems hopeless, just keep writing. No one who has ever kept at it has ever failed. It might take years, but eventually you’ll get there.

4. Your experience in the writing world, do you think it has already taken you where you wanted to go?

I’m still in the middle of my journey. Honestly, it’s a journey I hope never ends. When I reach one goal, I’ll set another so I always have something to strive for. Right now, I’m aiming to reach a point where my income from book sales is enough to support my family. From there… who knows?

5. In your opinion, are you a writer or an author – and what is the difference for you?

I’m both. A writer is someone who writes. It’s that simple. An author is someone who has written and published a story, essay, article, etc. So, really, even someone who has a blog is an author. I’ve always had a hard time understanding why people complicate those terms.

6. Please, tell us about your projects again. Was there progress since the last interview or are there even completely new projects?

Well, my Shadow Stalker serial is ending soon. The last episode will be released in September and the Bundle will be released in November. I’ve begun work on my next serial, which will be about the origin of the shadow stalkers. The episodes in that one will be shorter (about 3k to 4k words), but I’ll be releasing a new one every two weeks. Each season will have 22 episodes and at the end of each year, I’ll release a bundle of all the episodes from that season.

I’m also publishing short stories more regularly now and working on my first novel series.

Thank you for being my guest. It was such a pleasure to have you here!!

Excerpt #1:

Makari stirred the contents of the pot that held our evening meal. “Now is probably not the best time for exploring.”

“No. I know. I was just thinking that maybe one of these tunnels might lead to the camp.”

“They might, but we have no idea which ones, and we’re more likely to get lost.”

I was only partially listening to them. One of the tunnels seemed to stand out more than the others. It seemed brighter even though I knew it couldn’t have been. And voices whispered in my mind as if encouraging me to go there. “I can find the way, but it will take several hours of hiking.”

“You’ve been in these mountains?” Makari asked.

“Well, Kado and I did come up here a few times, but not this mountain specifically. We went further north.” I sighed. Now was just as good a time as any to tell him. “My powers have returned. I drank the water from the Black Lake and after that something happened. I can access the shadow world again, but it’s different now. Everything feels different.”

“Different how?”

I shook my head. “I can’t explain it.”

Excerpt #2:

“You’re sure you know what you’re doing?” Jade asked, nervously.

This had been her idea and now that she realized how narrow and dark the tunnels were, she didn’t feel as confident.

“Yes. I’m absolutely sure.”

It wasn’t long before we came to the first fork. I paused to examine both tunnels. Even with the torch light, one tunnel stood out brighter than the other. The voices seemed louder now too as I headed down the left tunnel. I was on the right path. Every time we came to a fork, it was the same.

“We seem to be going down. You’re positive this is the way?” Makari asked.

“Yes.” I closed my eyes a moment and I could see the tunnel laid out before me in my mind. “It starts going up again a short distance from here, but it’s going to be a pretty steep incline.”

After another twenty minutes of walking, I paused at the bottom of the incline.

Makari seemed stunned. “How are you doing this?”

“I have no idea. It’s as though something is guiding me.”

“I hope it’s something that wants to help and not something that wants to get us lost or killed,” Jade said.

Excerpt #3:

I didn’t have time to reflect on what just happened. Makari was still in danger. I moved closer to him, right on the edge of the veil. I felt the tingling of the beryllonium’s effects. Strangely, I suddenly felt stronger. I needed to get Makari back into the shadow world before that trooper came to his senses and returned. If I could wrap myself in the veil, maybe I could do the same for him.

In my mind, I imagined the veil like a blanket. I pushed it out and manipulated it so that it surrounded Makari.

He sat up, looking around. Are you doing this, Auren?

Yes, I sent back.

When he regained some of his strength he shifted and joined me in the shadow world. We returned to the cavern.

“What did you do? How did you do that?” Makari asked.

“I’m not sure. Somehow, I was able to affect the trooper’s thoughts. I convinced him that you weren’t a threat and he left. Then I wrapped you in the veil to nullify the beryllonium’s effects.”

Makari shook his head slowly then gazed at me. “Could you do that again?”

Excerpt #1:

Kado closed the distance between us. “Auren, I’m taking you from this place. You can either come or your own free will or by force.”

Tamir tensed next to me. I held my hand up to stall whatever he was planning. I didn’t need this turning into a fight, especially in front of Jade. Physically she was healing well, but her mind was still fragile.

“If I go with you—“

“If?” Kado arched an eyebrow.

“’If’ I go with you, we have to take Jade as well, and you have to promise me you’ll return her to Deakan on Appolia before we return to the Dark Isle.”

“It’s not possible, Auren. You can give birth any day now. Makari will keep Jade safe for the time being.”

Jade grabbed tightly onto my arm.

I stood my ground. “I won’t leave without her.”

________________________________________________________________________

Excerpt #2:

“Let’s move,” he whispered.

He turned towards the mountains to lead us on a more difficult path. So much for taking the easier route through the pass. It wouldn’t likely slow the dogs, but it might slow their handlers and the dogs wouldn’t stray far from them. By the time we started up the mountain, the dogs were getting closer.

“Keep going,” Kado told me. “I’m going to lead them away from you and I’ll catch up.”

Kado strode off. Jade watched him with panic in her eyes.

“Don’t worry. He’ll be back soon,” I assured her.

“Yeah, but what if they come after us?”

Excerpt #3:

Jade rested her hand on my shoulder and gave it a squeeze. “It must have been hard realizing you knew nothing about who you really were.”

“It was, but at the same time at least I finally understood why Kado was so protective of me. Even then, the Galvadi were hunting for me. And I didn’t make it easy for him. He was trying to keep us off their scanners, while I was doing everything possible to gain some freedom.”

“That’s pretty scary. I wonder if you ever came close to being captured even then.”

I shrugged. “Kado never said anything, but then he’s not one to rehash the past unless there’s something to gain from it.”

Jade sighed. “Does Kado hate me?”

Excerpt – Episode 13: Chapter 1 (feel free to use all or part of the excerpt)

Cali gave me a nudge as she took a seat next to me. “Do you have any idea what’s going on?”

“No idea,” I said, moving over a few inches so she had space to sit between me and Shai on the log someone had converted into a bench.

Shai slung an arm around her cousin and Cali returned the gesture, then wrapped her free arm around me. I smiled at her. Cali was the only one who had helped me maintain my sanity over the years. It drove me crazy never knowing what was happening to Makari. Kado kept me busy, as usual, but any time I had a free moment, all I could do was wonder if he was safe. I would know if he died. I would sense him again in the shadow world. He had been blocking me to keep me safe, though I had no idea how it was supposed to help. All it did was make me want to go to him, which would be more dangerous.

Of course, Kado would never allow that. He saw my thoughts as I had them most of the time, and he would know as soon as I made the decision. I learned quickly not to allow my thoughts to go down that path too often. That’s where Cali came in. She distracted me by helping me forget the war and making me feel like a normal person once in a while. She was as good a friend as Jade, except she didn’t encourage me to disobey Kado when I was angry.

“Maybe the Galvadi have decided to give up,” Shai said, pulling me out of my thoughts.

Cali snorted.

“I know. It’s wishful thinking.”

I smiled at Shai. “I want this to be over too.”

“You’ll figure it out soon.” Cali gave my shoulder a squeeze.

All the shadow warriors knew the end of the war would not come until I stopped Drevin. The only problem was I had no idea what I was supposed to do, and no amount of training helped. Each day it seemed like I was further from my goal instead of closer.

After everyone had taken their seats, Kado held up a hand calling us all to silence. “Makari has just given me some disheartening news. The Galvadi have developed a—”

I tried to listen, but I couldn’t get past the fact that Makari had been here. “He didn’t even bother to see me?”

Kado glared at me, and I suddenly realized I’d blurted it aloud.

“Makari has to keep a low profile for his own safety, and they were not aware he had left. He couldn’t stay away long.”

“I think it’s time he left the Galvadi all together,” I said, folding my arms over my chest.

“It would be the healthier option,” Cali added on my behalf.

“Makari’s work has been invaluable to us, and would not be possible if he weren’t living among them for the time being,” Kado said, then leaned in my direction looking straight into my eyes. “And he knows what he is doing.”

Kado watched me, and I was sure he was waiting to see if I would continue to interrupt him. I remained silent, but neither he nor Makari would be able to convince me the man I loved wasn’t taking an unnecessary risk. They could get whatever information they needed from their missions.

When he was sure I wouldn’t interrupt again he finished explaining that the Galvadi had developed a new recinder and how it worked. “You will need to avoid capture at all costs. Once these recinders are placed on you, there is no known way to nullify its effects even after removal. Auren, I want you to visit Makari’s unit to steal the schematics, and if possible, one of the recinders along with any other information you can find about new technologies. Makari suspects there is more, but they are keeping him in the dark.”

I stood quickly, smacking my hands together. “When do I leave?”

“Wait a moment. I have other things I need to discuss with you first.”

I sat again, hoping I wasn’t in for one of his long lectures.

“The rest of you are dismissed. Sephir, you and Shai are clear to leave on that special mission you’ve been training for as soon as you’re ready, but please be careful.”

“We will,” Sephir said, bowing.

I leaned over Cali to give Shai a quick hug. Cali wrapped her arms around both of us. Shai stood as soon as we released her, and Sephir, who had been standing next to her, wrapped an arm around her as they headed off.

“Good luck,” Cali said, winking at me before following Sephir and her cousin.

Kado sat next to me. “Auren, you have been the most adept at overcoming the effects of the beryllonium. That’s why I’m sending you on this mission, but you need to be extra careful this time. Makari believes even you wouldn’t stand a chance with this new recinder. If they are looking for test subjects, they may also have new ways of detaining shadow stalkers that Makari might not be aware of. If you are discovered, do not take any risks. Makari will not be able to help you. You will need to leave immediately. Understood?”

“Yes, Kado. I’ll be fine.” I only just managed to stop my eyes from rolling.

“I’m serious, Auren. We can always return later, but if you are captured, you may be lost to us for good this time.”

The fear in Kado’s eyes sobered me. Things came easily to me now that I had completed my training, and though I had discovered abilities not even Kado had known about, I wasn’t foolish enough to believe I was all powerful. Sometimes my foster father seemed to worry more than he should, but I was beginning to think that wasn’t the case here.

“I’ll be careful, Kado. I promise.” It wouldn’t hurt to pay Makari a little visit too if he was alone.

Kado gripped my arm and tilted my head with his free hand so I was looking directly at him. “Under no circumstances are you to seek out Makari. If you attempt something so foolish, Auren, you will be punished and banned from future missions.”

My shoulders sagged. “It was an errant thought, Kado. I will focus on my mission.”

“The mission and nothing else, Auren. This is important.”

I nodded and averted my eyes. I just missed him. That’s all it was.

“I know you miss him, Auren, and that it’s been hard for you both to be apart, but it won’t be forever. You and Makari will have your time in this world if the shadow people will it, but not if you risk both your lives on foolishness.”

“I know. I’m sorry.” Makari was being the more foolish of us both, and yet Kado supported him. It didn’t make sense, but whenever I brought the subject up with either of them, they redirected the conversation.

Kado pulled me into a tight hug and whispered, “Come back to me in one piece, please.”

I returned his embrace. “I will.”

shadow-stalker-writerWelcome

1. When did you start writing?

I’ve always loved telling stories, but I didn’t start writing until I was in my mid-twenties. English was not my best subject in school, so it just never occurred to me to write my stories down. But in college I took a creative writing class and my English instructor suggested I consider getting my work published. That’s when I started considering writing as a career.

2. What motivates you to write?

I have a very overactive imagination. I used to make up stories as a kid just as an outlet. Now writing is my outlet. When I don’t write, I actually suffer from anxiety and start having very strange (often scary) dreams.

3. What genre do you write in and what made you chose this particular genre?

I’ve loved reading fantasy since I was a kid, so when I started writing it was naturally the genre I wanted to write. My writing has a darker side to it, and I don’t write the common sword and sorcery type fantasy. The magic in my stories has more shamanic leanings.

4. What is your goal in writing? Do you have dreams where your writing should take you?

My main goal is to build up enough of an income to support my family solely with my writing. I’d love to have more than that, but that would just be a bonus. I also love entertaining people and just want people to get something from what I write. I’ve had stories I’ve read really change the way I look at the world. It would be amazing to affect someone in that way (for the better, of course).

5. Do you ever suffer from writer’s block and if yes, how do you deal with it?

I wouldn’t call it writer’s block exactly. I have Hashimoto’s Disease and sometimes I suffer from brain fog. That makes writing difficult because I can’t concentrate long enough to put ideas to paper. Thankfully that doesn’t happen too often, but when it does it can last weeks or months sometimes. The only thing I can really do is try to write as much as I can. Even if I only write a paragraph a day in times like that, at least it’s something.

6. What advice would you like to give new, hopeful authors?

Start building your platform before you publish your first book. That involves setting up a website and/or blog and getting involved in social media and writing groups. Get to know your potential readers and let them get to know you as a person first and an author second. Also, set up a newsletter. Even if you haven’t published a book yet, maybe you can write an exclusive short story you can offer as an incentive to sign up.

7. Please, tell us about your work.

For the last couple of years, I’ve been self-publishing a dark fantasy serial called Shadow Stalker. It’s about a young shadow stalker, Auren, who is being hunted by the Galvadi Empire because they believe she will enslave the people of their world. She has to stop their tyranny while proving to herself and others that she’s not the danger they believe she is. The first book, Shadow Stalker Part 1 (Episodes 1 – 6) is available free from my website: http://reneescattergood.com

3 Day Quote Challenge – Day one

I would like to thank Patricia Garcia for inviting me to participate in this 3-Day Quote Challenge. Her blogs and writing as well as her music are an inspiration to me. Patricia Garcia is an amazing personality, a wonderful person and a loyal and caring friend. That’s how I want to be when I grow up.

A few years back I was in the middle of a phase in my life where I had problems to focus on my goals. I got overrun by all the bad things happening to the same time. I’ve always been a person to work on trouble or on problems when they show up and eliminate them to continue concentrating on the important things. But at that particular time trouble seemed to know where I was and waited there for me. Being overwhelmed it all felt to be much more than I could handle.

I was always dreaming of being a writer and a published author, but the time back then pulled me into a deep hole where I couldn’t find out anymore.

I followed many advices, too many to be effective, but one advice was a good idea: get distraction. Laugh whenever you can do that. Watch a funny movie, read a funny book and do whatever you can to calm down, which is essential to focus and work on things.

I decided to do that and found myself in front of the TV to have fun watching “10 things I hate about you”, with Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. Heath Ledger played Patrick Verona, a boy in his final High School year.

At one point Pat Verona tells a co-student:

“Don’t let anyone ever make you feel like you don’t deserve what you want!!”

This quote has changed my view on things and challenged me so enormously, I found the strength to do what needed to be done and continue following my dream.

I found true inspiration, just out of a funny teenage movie. And the quote is still with me to this day, on a poster at the door to the room where I usually write.

What quote or quotes has changed one of your mindset and has inspired you to change?

I invite you to visit them and be inspired.
