Smorgasbord Cafe and Bookstore – Meet the Authors #Fantasy Deborah Jay, #ParanormalRomance A.J. Alexander, #Historical Ruth Larrea

Me and my books mentioned in Smorgasbord Cafe and Bookstore. Thank you so much, Sally! ❤

Smorgasbord Blog Magazine

There are over 150 authors in the Cafe and Bookstore and I wanted to keep it to key pieces of information such as buying links, recent review, website and covers. However, I know that readers also like to know more about the background of authors.

In this series during June and July I will share the bios of all the authors in the cafe in a random selection. I hope that this will introduce you to the authors in more depth and encourage you to check out their books and follow them on their blog and Twitter.

Meet Deborah Jay

Deborah Jay writes fantasy and urban fantasy featuring complex, quirky characters and multi-layered plots – just what she likes to read.

Fortunate enough to live not far from Loch Ness in the majestic, mystery-filled Scottish Highlands with her partner and a pack of rescue dogs, she can often be found…

I’m The Paranormal Romance Guild’s Featured Author Today

Lately, I was interviewed for the website of the Paranormal Romance Guild and was informed that the interview would be on the website today. Thank you very much for the great feature, Paranormal Romance Guild! I’m very excited!

Interview with AJ Alexander
by Sherry Perkins

AJ Alexander — author, poet, lover of Maine coon cats. Don’t know what a Maine coon cat is? It’s a ball of fur with attitude. But I digress…I met AJ through the Paranormal Romance Guild and an incidental Facebook encounter where she was holding the Halloween poetry contest she sponsors every year. She was looking for contest judges. I volunteered.
To be honest, I’d also been following her blog, “Writer’s Treasure Chest,” for quite a while as well. AJ’s blogs are filled with goodies such as writing and marketing advice, the occasional bit of comedic relief and even pictures of Maine coon cats. But more than that, she’s a writer who loves what she does — whether it’s novellas, poetry or paranormal romance and fantasy — and it shows.

She took a minute away from promoting her newest book, “Demon Tracker,” to answer a few questions.

1. Short stories, poetry, and novels–which is your favorite to write, and why?

I love writing novels (and novellas, in my case), and also, I write poetry, some of which I published on my blog “Writer’s Treasure Chest.” I enjoy the flow of the words and the rhymes when I write poetry. I could get carried away within the verses. The novel writing is my true passion. I have a straight plot; then I start knitting the “side-stories,” put my pen on the paper and start writing. Often there is even another one or two more side stories or unexpected characters coming up. I love the creating of worlds, weaving my imagination with the characters, and see how they develop.
All this is rarely possible with short stories. I’m not saying they’re a terrible thing, but they need a lot of planning to get one entire story inside of around 7,500 words. I love it to be carried away by the story, and it is almost a punishment to limit my fantasy into a word-frame.

Soul Taker Secrets: Interview With Nathan – Who Is He And Do We Meet Him Again?

To the readers of ‘Soul Taker,’ Nathan is a known character. He only shows up briefly at the beginning of the story. He takes Katie’s spot when she accepts her new tasks as a Guardian.

If you haven’t read ‘Soul Taker’ yet, it is time to read: I added the universal link where the book is available.

https://books2read.com/u/m2roOj

Below you will find an interview with Nathan. Read it and find out more about an Angel we only know by name – and by a perfectly tailored suit.

Excerpt from ‘Soul Taker’:

He looked over my shoulder, and I turned around, watching two beautiful looking men walking toward us. One of them was dressed in a suit and tie and looked elegant and chic like a businessman. The other one wore old jeans, cowboy boots, and a long-worn leather coat.

Joseph smiled. He introduced me to the business-like guy. “This is Nathaniel. He’s your replacement and will take your job over from here.”

The Guy shook my hand. “Please, call me Nate,” he said with a laugh.

Hello Nathan. It is great seeing you again. How are you doing?

Hello AJ. Nice to see you too. I’m doing okay. Unfortunately, I’m far too busy. Sometimes I wish I had more time off.

We know you took over from Katie when she wanted to become a Guardian and met Raphael.

Yes, I did. I was quite surprised to hear the two fell in love. I was invited to their wedding but unfortunately couldn’t go because of an emergency.

Why were you surprised? From what I hear, Katie is breathtakingly beautiful, and Raphael, from what I heard, has celebrated quite some success with the ladies.

Yes, but we were taught that it is almost impossible for an Archangel to find his consort.  Raphael found his consort, and now we all are curious to see who of the Council Of Twelve is going to be next.

How about you? Is there someone special in your life?

I admit, there is someone I love. But I am not permitted to talk more about all that, remember? You told me to keep my mouth shut about that.

(Oh, yes. *AJ laughs* I forgot)

But now, tell us a little bit about you. Who is Nathan?

I am a Soul Taker, as you know. I have been one for about a millennium. I pick up souls and take them to their respective final destinations. Usually, it is Heaven, but occasionally I have to take them to the gates of Hell. Rarely we Soul Takers are attacked by the other side who try to steal the soul we are working with.

Now, we know Katie got tired of doing this job for three hundred years. Aren’t you tired out by that job?

Well, Katie and I are two completely different personalities. She is younger than I am, for one thing. Also, she is quite emotionally sensitive. I could easily imagine that a soul she takes to the portals of the Underworld is trashing, crying, regretting, screaming, is almost breaking her heart.

And we shouldn’t forget: We are taking all kinds of souls… not only bad ones, not only good ones, and in particular, we do have to pick up innocent souls too. That was very hard on Katie.

I had to harden my emotions and heart against this kind of compassion, or I could never have done that job to my satisfaction and the satisfaction of my bosses.

We met you briefly in Katie’s story. And now we learned a bit more about who you are. Are we going to meet you again?

Yes, you will meet me again. You will learn more about me. Just be a bit patient. I’ll be back.

Thank you so much for dropping in as my guest today, Nathan. We really appreciate it.

Thanks for having me. It was my pleasure.

Soul Taker Secrets: Katie’s European Cooking

Katie got a hint from one of the top angelic chefs in the warrior’s kitchens. With his help, she cooked an unusual kind of casserole in European style. Needless to say, the entire Council Of Twelve enjoyed that particular dinner enormously. Zachariel even went as far as to smirk and say: “This doesn’t taste half bad. Maybe there’s hope for your wife, Rafe.”

The pot:

This recipe needs a very particular European style pot, the so-called “Romertopf”. The pot can be ordered on Amazon. It isn’t a cheap product. But it’s a fantastic way to cook healthy and collect the food’s own taste.

Check out the Romertopf (and order) here

The casserole:

You will need:

1 pound of potatoes (or baby potatoes)

3 or 4 big tomatoes

1 big onion or 10 – 12 scallions

1 pack of dried apricots

6  chicken drumsticks

1 cup chicken broth

1 tsp unsalted butter

salt, pepper, paprika

Instructions:

  1. Take the pot: read its instructions carefully: if it’s a pure clay pot, water it sufficiently before starting to cook. If it’s glazed, like mine, just butter it with the tablespoon of butter. It’s easy to clean. (But NOT dishwasher-proof!!)

2.  Prepare the potatoes. Wash them, peel them and cut them into cubes. (or do it as I did with the baby potatoes, which I didn’t peel and cut them into 4 to 6 pieces.  Cut the tomatoes into pieces, peel the scallions, or peel and cut the onion into small pieces. Prepare the cup of chicken broth.

3. Prepare the chicken drumsticks, unpack them, wash them, dab them dry and season them with only a bit of salt, pepper, and paprika, on both sides. You can also buy a whole chicken and cut it into 4 – 6 pieces. (I decided on drumsticks because, as much as I like chicken, I’m not a doctor and autopsies aren’t my favorite thing to do.)

4. Fill the bottom of your pot with the small cut onion, the potatoes, the dried apricots, and the broth. On top put the drumsticks. Cover the pot and put it into the cold oven. Heat it up to 425 degrees F and leave it for 50 minutes.

5. After these 50 minutes, add the tomatoes to the pot, cover it again and leave it for another 15 – 20 minutes.

6. Remove the lid of the pot and leave it for about 10 minutes in the oven, uncovered.

7. Remove it from the oven, prepare a few plates and serve it. Enjoy.

Book Signings And How To Be Horribly Underprepared – My Guest Post on The Story Reading Ape’s Blog

My guest post about book signings and how to be horribly underprepared was published today on The Story Reading Ape’s blog. Thank you so much for your ongoing support, Chris! What would I do without you?

When I was happily posting about my first book signing, a couple of weeks back, I was looking so forward to what is going to happen that I was completely unprepared. I mean, what exactly would happen? I hoped for people dropping by at my table, loving the book, buying it and I’d sign it. – Wonderful me.

Normally I am a very cautious person, and I love to go somewhere, no matter where, and be really prepared. That day I wasn’t. I didn’t have more than only a few days to get ready for that book signing, and I completely slept the preparation away. There were many other things going on as well, but that isn’t a decent excuse to be as sloppy as I was.

What did I take?

  • My books
  • A couple of business cards (me and the books)
  • Postcards
  • Some Pen
  • Tiny wing charms as giveaways

Author Spotlight: Aurora Jean Alexander – By K. M. Jenkinks

I’m honored to announce I’m a guest today on Author K. M. Jenkin’s blog as her Featured Author. Thank you very much!

It’s Saturday, the first Saturday in the school year here in Sioux City, IA. My nieces went back to school just yesterday, which I think is stupid. Who starts school on a Friday and then bam it’s the weekend. Makes no sense. Well, anyway today I am giving over my blog to Paranormal Romance and Fantasy author Aurora Jean Alexander. She is going to talk about her current series in the works and her lovely kitties. Hope you have an awesome read…

I am Aurora Jean Alexander, AJ in short. I’m an author who recently published her 2nd book in ‘The Council Of Twelve’ series, Sundance.

I was quite young when I discovered I wanted to write. I doubt I can tell you one specific time or even time frame when I started writing. I felt that’s what I wanted to do. Since I lack talent in painting and drawing, I had to do something with my creativity and decided that’s the way to do it.
