Soul Taker Secrets – The Council Of Twelve Is Fantasy!

I was asked a short while ago: “The Council Of Twelve” series is a series of religious books, right?” I almost laughed. However, I kept my cool and smiled. “No, it’s not. I’m writing a YA fantasy series!” And it is important to me that my readers take it as such!

The Council of Twelve series is a work of fiction, it won’t proclaim truth or even faith.

The Catholic Bible mentions seven Archangels, some of them named, and some are not. According to old scriptures, four Archangels’ names are known: Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, and Uriel. I ‘borrowed’ these names and added eight more Archangels to form the ‘Council of Twelve’. (Also, who tells me, these names are correct? We know them, yes. But I doubt very much anyone on Earth can remember, that our Lord God named four of his Archangels Michael, Raphael, Gabriel, and Uriel). Still, through history, these names, in connection with a strong, powerful creature called an ‘Archangel’, represent the ‘ultimate’ Good.

In my series, I wanted the ‘ultimate Good’. I wanted the fight ‘Good vs. Evil’… And angels and demons are the ones fighting that war. The characters of Archangels, angels, demons, and their respective hierarchies give me freedom any fantasy writer can only dream of!

Now, while Michael has on occasion been called the ‘Angel of Death’, others called him the ‘Archangel of War and Conflict’, on further websites and in articles he was the ‘Archangel of Peace and Safety’… who is right? Nobody knows for sure. And that’s why Archangel Michael in ‘The Council of Twelve’ series, is exactly, what I made him; the strongest, most powerful individual in existence, except his creator, of course, the oldest existing Archangel, and the leader of the Council.

Who said, Raphael was ‘the Healer’? In other essays, he’s described as ‘the Guardian’, and nobody can tell for sure, what and who he is, right? I made him both; the protector and keeper of the Healers and the Guardians…

It seems different sources are clear about Gabriel being ‘The Messenger’… and I kept it that way. The bible is clear about Gabriel being the Archangel sent to inform Virgin Mary about her being the mother of God’s son. Gabriel was also the Archangel who announced the birth of Jesus of Nazareth in Bethlehem.

As for Uriel, nobody is sure about his sources and roots. He’s described as ‘the Fire of God’, in other articles he’s been called the ‘balance of the world’, and other sources claim him to be ‘the Angel of Death’. It is said in certain books, that Uriel was the Archangel who killed the firstborn sons of Egypt when the Pharao didn’t let Moses’ people leave the country. The bible only talks about the ‘Angel of Perdition’, no name was mentioned there. But since it was talked about a powerful angel with a ‘fire sword’, it was assumed that Uriel was the one fulfilling God’s orders in that case. But again, nobody can tell for sure. In ‘The Council of Twelve’ series, Uriel is God’s beloved son, made out of fire and ashes, with flames in his wings. My Uriel is an Archangel existing in my fantasy… he’s caring, loving, and protecting, and he looks fabulous.

I purposely refrained from using any further Archangel names as they were mentioned in additional articles, books, or the ‘lost books of the bible’, the Apocrypha. I made up eight Archangels, born in my imagination and fantasy, each one strong, powerful, unique, and with his own set of skills. Each of these Archangels brings his own personality, talents, and voice into the ‘Council of Twelve’ and completes his brothers. Each of the Archangels is good to the core, fights the evil side, and protects his troops. They all fight, discuss, plan, protect… sometimes they joke, they laugh, they support each other, and they fall in love.

I have been writing about doing ‘research’ for ‘The Council of Twelve’ series. We are talking about the list of demons of the Ars Goetia, which helped me get my ‘Evil’ side organized and set up. The Good side needs an antagonist, and Lucifer doesn’t fight all alone. Again, we aren’t talking about a fact list… We’re talking about a lot of fantasy being involved in getting ‘The Council of Twelve’ series created. Of course, I didn’t take every demon’s name and transferred the creature into my book. I made some of them up, I gave them a voice, a look, a truly hateable creature. But all this is rooted in my fantasy and imagination.

If an author takes fantastic creatures and magic and transfers both into our existing world, in combination with falling in love and kissing, the genre is called ‘Paranormal Romance’. The Council of Twelve series is taking place in Heaven, on Earth, and in Hell, two of the three places are unknown to living organisms, which made me consider ‘my genre’ as ‘Fantasy’. There are too many unknown factors to call it ‘Paranormal Romance’.

Now, we know what the genre is called, but I downright refuse to consider ‘The Council of Twelve’ series ‘Christian or Religious Fantasy’. There’s too much fantasy in these books to truly consider them religious. It is an undeniable fact that the author of these books is a believer in God. It’s clearly readable that the Creator of the World has my highest respect. I never describe Him in detail. When He shows up within the stories, only His voice is mentioned. Heaven and Hell are formed and described after my imagination.

I’m not going into religious discussions, I don’t use bible quotes, and I am not going to argue with anyone about whether my fantasy is the ‘real’ Heaven, Hell, or story. The Good side is, what’s close to my heart, and you won’t find anything better to fight for the ‘Good side’ than a dozen Archangels with their love interests. Not to talk about the fact that I added a bit of humor to the stories, and I expect my readers to laugh, enjoy the stories and fall in love with the characters, just like other authors do. I’d like my readers to be entertained, and not to think too intensely about religious beliefs when reading ‘The Council of Twelve’ series. Read, be entertained, and enjoy.

Soul Taker Secrets – Exotic Salad For Busy Council Members

In the past ‘Soul Taker Secret’ posts, we learned that Katie loves cooking, not only for Raphael but all Council members with their consorts. Now, Katie is an enthusiastic cook, but not a particularly good one, even though she made progress by constant learning and her consort friends’ help.

With the help of her ‘sisters,’ Katie developed an exotic salad for the busy members of the ‘Council of Twelve.’

I heard they all loved it – and so do I.

Ingredients:

  – 1 1/3 cups brown rice

  – 5.29 ounces salmon (steamed)

-   2 slices fresh pineapple

-   1 mozzarella (ball)

 – 1 bunch fresh thyme

 – grated lemon peel (as needed)

 – salt

  – ground black pepper

Directions

  1. Cook the rice in a stockpot full of boiling salted water for approximately 45 to 50 minutes.
  2. Drain the rice and allow it to cool.
  3. While the rice cools, prepare the dressing by steaming the salmon with lemon peel and thyme.
  4. Cook the salmon for approximately 10 minutes, let it cool slightly, then break it up delicately into small pieces.
  5. Next cut up the mozzarella into cubes and place it on a paper towel for 10 minutes.
  6. Peel the pineapple and cut two slices into small cubes.
  7. Plate the salad by placing the cooled rice in a large bowl, add the salmon pieces, the diced mozzarella and pineapple, some grated lemon peel, salt and pepper to taste, and the fresh thyme.
  8. Refrigerate the salad for a few hours before serving.

Soul Taker Secrets – Who Would I Cast For My Female Characters? (I)

In August 2019 I published a post about a group of actors who I would pick for my ‘Council Of Twelve’ characters. At that time the only known consort was Katie, who I included in the list.

Today, May 2021, almost two years later, four books are published, and even though I introduced three consorts to the readers, there are couple more characters in these books, who I’d like to turn into a known face.

Let’s see, why not introducing the characters by book?

Soul Taker

Katie – Arielle Kebbel
Aylah, Katie’s warrior friend – Chloe Grace Moretz

Sundance

Sundance – Lucy Hale
Bluerose – Millie Bobby Brown

Demon Tracker

Zepheira – Gemma Arterton

Bounty Hunter

Simin Arnatt – Ashley Greene

I know, compared to the other post, where I tried to find actors for ‘The Council of Twelve’, I had a few characters more than here. But with the growth of the series, I promise, I will extend this list. (And you never know, I might exchange the one or other actress or actor. We will see.

If you read the book, do you have any better suggestions? Fire away here in the comments. I’m prepared!

The Council Of Twelve Series – Picking Fashion For My Male Characters I

Today I decided to dress my Council Of Twelve.

The Council of Twelve series has four books out now. And my male characters are are group of the most powerful and very handsome characters, belonging to the oldest and strongest individuals in existence.

Teddy, our designer, who I published an interview with, a while ago, (you can read it here), of course does not only dress the Consorts of the Council of Twelve, but has dressed the Council members millennia longer. Of course, with the time, the fashion sense, trends and even the fighting methods changed, and Teddy, who is very resilient, has grown with those changes and developed.

I’m therefore showing you mainly examples of some of the work Teddy could have created. We’re talking about a designer, millennia old, who integrates tradition into the modern world – and dresses the Council members in a mixture of timeless – and timely outfits, depending on the necessary occasion.

Of course, our Council Members have to fight. They fight in battles, they fight against the evil side, the fight against their opponents, demons and demon minions, some of which are dangerous and extremely poisonous, by biting, clawing, even oozing poison through their skin. And the Council members have to be protected. I can easily imagine, some of them showing up on the battle field in part armor, or even entire body armors like these:

Or maybe even one of these old-fashioned, but extremely impressive armors they used to wear millennia ago:

Nowadays our Council members have no problems in showing up semi-formal to negotiations,.

In ‘Soul Taker’, I dressed Raphael in ‘Cowboy’ attire, just because he liked it, before he met his consort, Katie:

Of course, if the event demands formal attire, we can find each of the Council Members dressed in modern formal suit and tie, or even blazer, smoking and bow tie.

Teddy is a wise man, and a designer with an excellent taste. He doesn’t have any problem to let ‘formal attire’ be, and as a close friend to the ‘Council Members’, hang out with his friends to a game of cards, all of them in a relaxing sweat pants, shorts and t-shirts. Each of the Council members owns a couple pairs of jeans. With them being ever so modest, they don’t use an extended wardrobe, just like their consorts. And Teddy is not overly busy working for their clothing.

There is just one thing that, even the most classic of all Council Members, Santanael, is considering to mothball: The traditional snow white ‘night gown’, as the consorts call it… or, as it’s named in professional circles: ‘The Robe’.

Picking A Consort For A Council Member

The Council of Twelve Series has four published books so far.

Now, as compared to four published books, so far nine books in the series have been written. That means, there are not many Archangels without a consort anymore.

But how do I pick the Archangel consorts? What skills, what powers, what strength do they need to become an Archangel consort? How do they have to look?

These questions are answered quite simply:

  1. There’s only one rule: there is no rule anyone knows about it, except the Archangel’s Creator and Father.
  2. See rule #1

We have Katie, an Angel, who became an Archangel consort. In book three there is a Demon Tracker, Zepheira, or Zye, as her friends call her, who, with her unusual looks and two ram-like horns became an Archangel consort, and obviously is the only woman in existence who can take the Fire-Angel’s unshielded heat. In book four, we have a Bounty Hunter, Simin Arnatt, who carries a big secret, is immortal, and an Archangel consort.

The Council of Twelve fights against the ‘other side’, fights evil, tries to protect humans from being taken over. The war ‘Good vs. Evil’ is omnipresent. The other side gains strength and power. The good side is keeping up with unexpected power…

But how are the consorts found? How do they become consorts?

Let me find an example for you.

Sundance’s story ends with a ‘cliffhanger’. The young warrior-angel finds herself in a dreadful situation. She needs help, support. What I needed was a strong, independent, almost stubborn woman, with wit, boldness, and courage. I needed an experienced woman with her own set of skills. That’s how Zepheira was created. I wanted her extraordinary, not only in character but her looks too. That’s why I gave her the horns. Of course, she’s beautiful. And her inner bravery and her physical appearance, including her height, gave me three Archangels to hook her up with. In Zepheira’s case, these were Tsechirel, Zachariel, and Uriel. I had another woman in mind for Tsechirel and excluded him from the contest. After some more thinking, I decided on Uriel. And don’t they make a wonderful couple?

Of course, the further the series progresses, the less available Archangels are left, and the harder it gets, to find a suitable consort. If anyone has an idea for a consort, please let us know in the comments.

There are more consorts to show up, more stories to tell, and more lonely Archangels.

The Council Of Twelve Series – Picking Fashion For My Female Characters I

Today I decided to dress my ladies.

The Council of Twelve series has four books out now. And my female characters are three wonderful, beautiful, and completely different ladies. The ones of you who have read the books know what I’m talking about. Now, in all of my books, the characters’ wardrobe is playing only a minor role. None of my characters has an extended closet and mainly dresses for work or dresses up for a formal occasion.

Naturally, the characters have different tastes and styles to dress. Of course, we cannot forget Teddy, but if you would like to know who that is, please read the books, Teddy is hard to describe, and it certainly needs more than only one paragraph.

Let’s have a look at Katie. She’s a Guardian and therefore can relax a bit in the way she dresses. She tells herself she mainly likes to be comfortable, and those are two of her favorite outfits.

For a formal occasion, Katie can dress up in an official robe and look stunning in this turquoise gown:

Sundance is an essential leading character in ‘The Council of Twelve’ series. Even though as young as she is, she is an exceptional warrior and therefore dressed accordingly. (Most of the time).

As a protege of the ‘Council’ members and, in particular, the Council leader, she already has official tasks and duties to fulfill, and a formal dress for her can look like this:

The consort in book three, Demon Tracker, is Zepheira. Her unusual looks, her horns, her unique character and behavior, and her extraordinary abilities make her one of my many reader’s favorite characters in the books. She permits herself to dress in an extravagant style and can easily allow herself that freedom.

But even to Zye, how she’s called by her friends and family, formal means formal, and her consort insist on the traditional way in such a case. That doesn’t mean Zepheira always follows all the rules. A tiny sexy detail would be just like her… Dressed for an official occasion for Zepheira could look like that:

Authors: Do you dress your characters in your books? Is the outfit for you important, and do you spend pages describing it? Do you imagine how your characters look and are dressed? Let me hear it.

Readers: Do you want to read about the outfits your characters are wearing? Or is it sometimes too much for you?

I’d be happy to read your comments.

Returning Author Aurora Jean Alexander of Southern California – By Allan Hudson

In December 2018, I was lucky to be a guest on the ‘South Branch Scribbler’, author Allan Hudson’s blog. Back then, I introduced ‘Soul Taker’, the first book in ‘The Council of Twelve’ series. Today Allan Hudson allows me to talk about the series, books two and three, Sundance and Demon Tracker, and of course, book four, Bounty Hunter. Thank you very much, Allan!

Aurora visited us last in December of 2018 when she published the first book in The Council of Twelve series – Soul Taker. We chatted about the book, the series, childhood memory, and her exceptional website/blog – The Writer’s Treasure Chest, and she shared an excerpt from Soul Taker. If you missed it, please go HERE.

A lot has happened since then, and we are beyond happy to have Aurora back. She is kind enough to answer a few more questions and share an excerpt from Bounty Hunter.

Aurora Jean Alexander grew up in a family involved in politics and was blessed with an excellent education in several countries. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in BA. Currently, she lives in Southern California, all by herself, with three cats. A. J. Alexander is the author of ‘The Council of Twelve’ series, with three published books. The fourth book will be published soon.

4Q: Let’s start off with your newest book, Aurora. Demon Tracker has a fantastic cover. It’s generating a lot of excitement. What can a reader expect when they pick up your novel?

AJ: Demon Tracker is the third book in ‘The Council of Twelve’ series and introduces Zepheira to the reader. Zepheira is the best Demon Tracker working for the good side. She is hired by ‘The Big 7’ to find a lost demon and angel and find them quickly before the angel will be lost forever. During her assignment, she meets Archangel Uriel, the ‘Fire-Angel,’ and gets involved in the eternal fight Good versus Evil.
